We are driving from Roussillon to Barcelona to fly home. We'd like to stop part way to break up the drive. Can you suggest a nice village to spend the night? Would it be too much of a detour off the main road to head to a beach town? Thanks!
I don't know about beach towns but a few years back my traveling companion and I stayed in the small Cathar town of Cucugnan which was recommended in Rick's Guide as a "back door." Stayed in the Auberge du Vigneron and had a wonderful cassoulet in their excellent restaurant. In the morning, took a stroll through the village to the working mill where we bought some delicious baked goods from the bakers in the base of the mill. A bit off the beaten path but a unique spot. One of the highlights of a three week trip!
Have you considered Collioure? It is off the main highway, but its strong connection to the Fauve art movement makes it an important destination. And it has a beach.
