Interlaken to Paris--Could you stop in Annecy?

I've got a free weekend on a business trip.I finish in Geneva early on a friday and have to be in Paris by 8 pm on Monday. Decided to head to Interlaken but wondering f it would be possible to stop for just a day or part of a day in Annecy on the way to Paris? Or would it be better to spend the extra day in Interlaken? Have a Eurail pass.

I've not visited Interlaken (yet) but we did enjoy our stay in beautiful Annecy!

When is your trip taking place?

Depending on what time of year you'll be traveling, you may also consider taking this route; Geneva >> Chamonix >> Annecy >> Paris.

I've not traveled with an Eurail pass in a very long time, but I believe you need to make train reservations (& pay extra fee), especially for the TGV & intercity trains in France.

Enjoy your trip!

EDIT to add... Interlaken is in the opposite direction of your final destination (Paris), so take the travel time into consideration when deciding where to go ;-)

Annecy is way out of the way between Paris and Interlaken. You only have a few days. Concentrate on one or the other. A Eurail Pass only gives a 25% discount on the rail links to Muerren and Wengen, the really interesting and scenic spots near Interlaken. And you will need to purchase a reservation for the TGV to Paris, and the number of Eurail passholders is restricted on TGVs. So if you have not bought it already, rethink it.

Since the usual commenters haven't shown up, I'll warn you that just about everyone seems to agree that you don't want to stay in Interlaken. At least stay in Lauterbrunnen if for some reason you don't want to go as far up as Murren.

If you drive, which you don't want to do, Interlaken - Annecy - Paris would take 8-9 hours of road time.

By train it's 5 hours to Annecy alone. Good news: You can get from Annecy to Paris is just 4 hours.

Interlaken - Paris is 5 hours by train.

Don't know when you are going so can't comment on if the weather would be an issue or not in your decision. But regardless of that, I personally would just pick one or the other and spend your 3 nights in just that one place rather than trying to do both in that short of time. I agree with other poster who said that Interlaken would not be my first choice if I wanted to spend a couple of days in the mountains of Switzerland.

I will be boring and give you the standard warnings, repeating part of what others have said:

  • Annecy is in the opposite direction to Interlaken if you are starting from Geneva. One or the other, but both doesn’t make sense.
  • Interlaken is in a wide valley, from which side valleys lead up. If you want a real mountain experience, stay up in these higher valleys (Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, Wengen, ...). You get to these places via Interlaken.
  • If you want to get to Paris from Interlaken (or the other places accessible via Interlaken mentioned), the quickest route is via Basel. but from Geneva you can go direct. Lookup train times on the Swiss railways site: http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html
  • "Have a Eurail pass" - why? Simplest and cheapest option is to buy tickets from Geneva to wherever, and wherever via Basel to Paris. Basel to Paris (or Geneva to Paris) is cheaper bought in advance. With a Eurail pass you still need to buy a reservation on the leg to Paris, and buy (discounted) tickets past Interlaken.

That all makes sense. Thanks for the help. I'm actually in Europe for a month on business, travelling mostly by train. Thus the eurail pass. Looking forward to it. Thanks again.
