Interesting Stop Between Amboise and Mt. Saint-Michel

Looking for suggestions on an interesting place to stop for a few hours on the drive from Amboise to Mt. Saint-Michel. I'll be driving between the two locations and would like to stop for a few hours for lunch and to quickly tour the city. I'll be making the trip on a Sunday in mid April.

Thanks!

Some of our France tours make a lunch stop in Fougeres in Brittany, which is charming, small and walkable, even without a map, and a good place for Breton crepes. There's free parking near the Chateau.

Jordan- Don't know what plans you already have for the Loire area, but we really enjoyed the Château de Chenonceau, and rode there on rented bicycles from Amboise. Your car will get you there quicker. It's actually just a few miles southeast of Amboise, so it's not in the direction of Mont Saint-Michele, but worth a stop unless you're not into châteaux.

Also, have never been there, but have seen Le Mans with Steve McQueen several times. Perhaps a stop at that racing Mecca? See how fast your rental car will go? ;-)

I second Fougeres, I loved walking around the town and the chateau.

Vitré is also worth a stop, the historical centre of Le Mans and Musée des 24 Heures du Mans near the race-track main entrance. Parts of the track are public road like the D338 leading from Tours.

St. Malo is quite close to Mt. St. Michel, but it's worth a look. I also really like Le Mans. The old town is very, very walkable and worth looking at. There's some really good restaurants.

St. Malo is interesting but on a crowded peninsula. So it can be time consuming. I second Vitre. We didn't have time for the nearby estate of Madame Sevigny. Also consider Chinon and the ruined, medieval chateau. Also look up Dinan. Note that there are many important intact Chateaux west of Tours, just for example Villandry. In summer, there are some fine but rural public gardens, i.e. They require a detour on country roads.

One thing to consider is that Le Mans is closer to Amboise and Fougeres is closer to Mt Saint-Michel so it may depend on when you want to stop for a few hours and how far you want to drive after you stop.
