In Paris for Tour de France

We will be in Paris for the conclusion of the Tour de France. Any suggestions for good locations to watch the race? How soon should we plan to stake out a space?

I'd recommend staying at a hotel/apartment in the champs elysees area. Many roads around the area will be closed prior to the event. It'd be a lot easier to be able to reach the Champs by foot.

I think the best spot along Champs Elysses would be on the north side of the road leading up to the Arc de Triumph. The cyclists go slower on the incline and you get to see their faces v. their backs while flying down on the south side.

I imagine fans/spectators go early to save a good spot. You might want to get there in the morning with food/drinks and be prepared for a "picnic". The availability of bathrooms might be a serious concern as it's challenging enough in general to find bathroom while sightseeing in Paris.

Hope you enjoy the event! I'd love to be there one of these days.. it's a dream of a true cycling fan!

The Champs is the best place to view the conclusion since the riders go past 7 times...otherwise they go by in a flash and it's over!
When we went we arrived 4 hours early and staked out a spot under a tree where we wouldn't be looking into the sun. Be prepared to guard your spot with your whole body...people will literally try to shove their way in to get a spot as it gets more crowded.
Find a place close to a fast food joint (McDonalds' is pretty convenient) so you'll have somewhere to use the restroom and get something to drink. It's about a 6 hour commitment between getting there early, watching the vendor parade go by, and then finally seeing the peloton whiz by again and again. After they go by you can walk downhill to where the final awards ceremony takes place. If you have the time I think it's worth it to see!
