I would love to see Normandy, but it will take an entire day away from the sites of Paris. Recommendations?
A couple of assumptions here: you haven’t been to Paris before; by “Normandy” you mean the D-Day sites (there is a lot more to Normandy than that, and you cannot see all Normandy in one day); and, you are not going in winter. My advice: No, and I say that as someone very interested in military history. There is so much to see in Paris, and its closer daytrips such as Versailles or Chartres. I enjoyed a weekend in Normandy but that was after having lived in Paris for several months. Some years later a daytrip to Rouen was pleasant but Paris is more compelling unless you’ve seen pretty much everything there, as I had by then.
No, a day trip to Normandy is not worth it. Especially if this is a very short first visit to Paris. In size it is close to that of Maryland- impossible to see in just a few hours. You could get a very superficial overview on one specific place as a day trip, but it would only be worthwhile if you have a very compelling interest in going there.
This is actually a question that only you can answer here. It is worth it if it is something that you have always wanted to see and would be very meaningful. Like any trip you take, you need to determine what your personal priorities are. With 4 days you simply need to list what really matters to YOU, not what matters to others and then go for it.
I'd say no also. I would suggest a River Cruise on the Seine one day that starts and ends in Paris - they do many great stops along the way like Monet's Gardens, Rouen, Normandy along with the Beaches & Cemetery. We take a River Cruise once a year and really enJOYed the Seine. The river itself wasn't as pretty as the Danube, but the stops along the way were fantastic.
I like to take day trips to Paris. Never have taken a day trip to Normandie……and I’ve been going there for 20+years.
Candidly don’t bother going to Normandie, for scenery or history as you seem to be well engrossed with Paris.
We did a trip some years ago where we spent 9 nights in Paris and 5 nights in Normandy. While we really liked Normandy, with only 4 days I’d recommend spending all of your time in Paris because there is so much to see and do.
Normandy is almost 12,000 square miles. If you mean the D Day landing sites part of Normandy, it is possible to take a day trip and tour from Paris, but you will spend more hours on the bus than sightseeing. Or you could take a very early train and have a half-day tour and return by late train. Neither of these tours are cheap, although well-run. IMO the day will not be worth it. Save these sights for another trip. With just four days (I take it you have four full days/five nights) stick with Paris. You will have so much to see and do you will want to return for four weeks.
Everything Slate said is true. I just returned from four days in Normandy last week (D-day areas), and it was the shortest amount of time I have even spent there. And this was my tenth trip! I usually go for 10–12 days. Plus it takes the better part of a day to get there and back from Europe. Normandy is worth so much more than a flyby and taking a selfie at the beach. Give it the time it deserves and you will be rewarded handsomely.
Do you think you'll ever get back? I was thankful for 5 nights Bayeux, 2 Rouen 3 Paris last October. Last April I had 11 nights in Paris without Normandy except for Monet's gardens. If it's a high priority but you don't think you'll ever go back, then maybe, but there's a lot to do in Paris too.
No.
Even if there were only one place you wanted to visit in Normandie, one day would not justify the effort. It's too large, there are too many sights to see, and -- again -- even if you were only interested in one thing; say Mont-Saint-Michel or Rouen or Honfleur or Etretat or countless other places, one day wouldn't cut it.
We just returned last week from a two week trip to Europe, including 7 days in Paris - 10 of us including 5 college age + grandkids. The kids wanted to go to the D-Day beaches. We saw lots of groups, small & large, as we visited the American beaches - those landings were spread over 50 miles, including the airborne drops...you can not see it all in one day. I arranged transportation for us & contacted the WW2 Museum in New Orleans to identify a guide. We took an early train, met them in Caen, visited Saint Mere Eglise, Utah & Omaha beach, Pointe du Hoc & was at the cemetary above Omaha for the 4 PM Retreat. Took a train back to Paris that evening in time for supper. On our way back to the states, the kids said that Normandy was the best day of the trip...this after 14 full days & nights in Paris & Amsterdam. What those guys did 82 years ago still leaves an impression on those kids.
Enjoy your trip.
With planning anything is possible. If you don't think you will ever go back and you want to do this, I think you should. The above post shows you can manage it. Why not send them a private message to find the name of the tour group they used. We used HQ Company tours but it was a full day tour. Good luck with whatever you decide.
I'm a history fan. And a bravery fan. If this is your one shot to see Normandy, don't miss it.
It's possible to do but I wouldn't recommend it. There's so much to do in both places, it's a shame to miss a whole day in Paris for a truncated visit to Normandy.
HOWEVER
Visiting the D-Day beaches was almost a religious experience for me, and I can understand why someone would want to do it. We took a one-day tour with Overlord Tours and absolutely loved it, and they have one that picks you up at the train station in Bayeux and requires you to get on a very early train from Saint Lazare. https://www.overlordtour.com/product/tour-2fs-omaha-utah-full-day-tour-week-days-only/
Our first trip to Paris coincided with Memorial Day, and we did a day trip to the American Cemetery for the memorial service that day. It was awesome, and I highly recommend doing it! However, I would not recommend it for your short trip. We had 10 days in Paris that first trip, and I've been back to Paris at least 4 more times (usually for 2-3 days), and there is still more for me to explore there!
