Impossible to find hotel in lyon in december

Hello,

I am planning my trip to france 2 months ahead and thought that was enough.
I want to visit Lyon (around fetes des lumieres) and Strasbourg
And it is almost impossible to find good hotels in both cities. Almost all of them are sold out! How is this possible by now?
How can I find a hotel then?
When was I supposed to start planning my trip? Maybe 4 months earlier?

Thank for your help in advance!

Special events like the fetes des lumieres or Octoberfest in Munich get reserved early -- so people either book hotels further out (like Salzburg for Munich) or lower their quality levels/raise their price limits. Check booking.com to see what's still available -- and think of the hotels as just part of your European experience.

Ben and Laura are right, special events usually have this effect, so it makes sense that most places would be booked, but you could still find something. Try expanding your search to new locations (like Laura suggested) or refreshing those Booking.com results - sometimes the reservations fall through and you might find an opening.

Have a look at http://hotels.travelsupermarket.com too, they bring in accommodation options from various sources, including Laterooms.com, Expedia, Lastminute.com and Booking.com.
