Ile de la Cité mistake?

In bumbling around struggling to find the perfect apartment to rent, I thought I was renting a place on Ile Saint Louis. I have been eager to stay there for the great location and charming feel of the area. It turns out the place I rented is on Ile de la Cité, way up by the Pont Neuf. I'm worried it won't have the same charm of small shops and streets with cafes and small shops and bistros that I remember about Ile Saint Louis.

Can anyone tell me what it's like to stay in the top wedge of Ile de la Cité?
Thanks!

I did stay on Ile de la Cite before. I stayed at Hotel Dieu. I was there on the shoulder season in the fall before Covid.
It was okay. I didn't do much on the island...I was always going over to the Latin Quarter because not much was open. I did enjoy being next to and seeing Notre Dame each and every day. I think it will be fine....not the charm you're looking for though.

Too late now, but I’m surprised you didn’t look up the address on a maps program before reserving.

I stayed in hotel with tiny rooms near the Pont Neuf "Back in the Day". It was a great central location to every where else! And being next to Notre Dame is so Paris! Look at the suggested walking tours maps. You are minutes from the Louvre. How much time are you going to spend in your room? You can still get your Glace and Coissants on Saint Louis. Bon Voyage!

Oh, I've made a lot of mistakes over many years of trip planning, and I have a feeling this won't be my last. Occasionally those mistakes turn out to be blessings...

Pont Neuf, I assume you will be on Place Dauphine, or on the Quai with the Place Dauphine behind your building. Opposite end of the island from Notre Dame, but an attractive area. Check it out on google maps.

It’s a great area. I’ve stayed on both islands. When I stayed on one island I walked to the other and vice versa. To be honest, they felt like the same neighborhood to me just joined by a bridge. Place Dauphine is probably the prettiest place of both islands in my opinion.

Just an FYI, the Hôtel-Dieu is the oldest hospital in Paris. It's that large building located on the north side of the Notre Dame de Paris parvis. The do have, or at least they used to have, a few rooms that they rent.ed out as a hotel.

Jerry: is that where you stayed, in the hospital guest rooms, or has someone named a hotel, Hotel Dieu?

Edit: for future reference readers, it appears the hospital no longer has the hotel rooms for the public. And Jerry has described them to me in a pm as less than ideal, in fact kinda creepy, something I would have done in my 20s as a super-bargain traveler, but not now.

By the way, the west side of the island is lovely, OP.

Good to know. We are very close to Place Dauphine, but facing the Seine. Can't wait!

Place Dauphine is one of our favourite places in Paris.

We often stay on Ile St Louis, but try to always eat or have a drink in Place Dauphine, it is very attractive, so if you are near there you will be fine.

It is a perfect location to reach both sides of the river too, and to catch the Vedettes du Pont Neuf boats along the Seine.

I have stayed in at least 3 different neighborhoods in Paris. Each was enjoyable. It was fun to discover new places and fun to walk over and look at old haunts. Explore. Discover. Enjoy.

Nothing wrong with where your apt is, but it’s nothing like Ile St Louis. Your description of ISL is right, it’s like a charming village, very quiet at night, with lots of fun shops, a pharmacy, bakeries, places to eat, and two grocery stores. The area you’re staying doesn’t have lots of fun shops, no grocery store, and doesn’t feel like it’s a charming village. I grew up in Paris and visit every year. Yes, Place Dauphine has many restaurants, but none that appeal to me. ISL is just as close to the river and the Left Bank and Right Bank as your apt area, so i don’t know why a previous poster would cite that as a bonus. You’re going to enjoy the area where your apt is, it’s very nice, with amazing views, but it’s nothing like ISL.
