Arles, Nîmes, or Orange, which two would you pick? Focusing just on the amphitheatres and not the towns themselves... my Dad is interested and we got time to visit two of the three. Thanks for any perspectives you may offer :-)
The Orange theater takes my breath away every time I see it. It's one of my favorite Roman sites, along with the Trophée des Alpes.
Arles because you have both an arena and an amphitheater.
Nïmes is interesting but a little smaller, and is used today for everything from rock concerts to bull fights.
100% Orange, there’s really nothing like it. Haven’t visited Nimes, so naturally my vote is Arles, but the amphitheater is truly top notch. Arles also has a very nice Roman history museum that is worth a visit.
If you can find time, Vaison-La-Romaine has an extensive site of ruins. Among Roman ruins I rank it pretty highly. Lovely town too.
I love the theatre in Orange - it is like it was picked up off a stage yesterday and dropped there.
Arles is h-u-g-e. Fabulous but big, and hot. One of the best.
I haven't seen any of these, but I'm following because I plan to go to this area soon. If dad is also interested in the Pont du Gard, which looks to be pretty attractive, that would be a vote for Nimes, yes?
I visited all three last fall. The amphitheatre in Arles is more accessible than the one in Nimes, and it has a couple of towers added in the Middle Ages when the population lived inside it. I found it hard to get to the upper levels of the Nimes amphitheatre, and I thought the audioguide was hokey. The site in Orange is a theatre, not an amphitheatre, but a spectacular and easily accessible one.
Edit, for Jules -- Nimes is the closest of these cities to the Pont du Gard, but with a car you can get there from any of them pretty quickly, and also from Avignon. I know there are tours there from Avignon, and probably also from Nimes.
Hi Dick, so if you had to rank the three, which would you put last?
Arles has the theater but also some nice Roman baths.
