IDF Mobilites app

Headed to Paris for two weeks in September and wanting to buy the Navigo Decouverte weekly pass through the IDF Mobilites app ( I know I can’t buy the pass this far ahead). When I try to set up an account on the app I get a “Sorry access denied” message. Is this because I am in the US? Will it work if I try to set up an account after arrival? Would like to hear from anyone who has successfully purchased the Navigo Decouverte through the app on an iphone. Thanks in advance.

I have read that people are having difficulty setting up the app from the US. It should work just fine if you do it after landing in Paris. I have reloaded my Navigo Decouverte on the app without any problems, but I've had the app for years and don't recall if I downloaded it here or there.

have you tried Bonjour RATP app? You can buy passes on this app too.

But if someone can better explain the differences between IDF Mobilites and RATP apps that'd be great.

deebaxster, I'm wanting to buy a Navigo Decouverte weekly pass as well and have tried to use the Bonjour RATP app. It requires that I create an account and that's when I hit a roadblock as it errors out at that point. I don't think it is possible to do from the USA from what I've tried and read on the internet, unfortunately. I even tried the suggestion of doing it through my apple wallet (which I didn't know was a thing until I read it on the forum), and the weekly pass isn't an option. Unless someone knows of another option, I'll be waiting to get the pass until we arrive in France.

Yes, the IDF Mobilités app will geoblock you from creating an account when you are in the US.

In part, this is because the Navigo weekly and monthly passes were never intended to be tourist products and are intended for local commuters. Travelers have cottoned onto the fact that it's a good deal, but nevertheless this explains some of the rules around the pass, such as the strict Monday-Sunday timeframe (which is generally fine if you're a local commuter/rider, but can be annoying for a tourist.)

I would also say to be a bit more precise with the (admittedly confusing) terminology -- it may sound nitpicky but this is because it can lead to confusion!

The Navigo Découverte is a physical card on which you can load passes (such as the weekly or monthly pass). You can recharge the Navigo Découverte using an iPhone, by literally physically holding up the card to the iPhone and paying on the phone. But to do this, you of course have to have the physical card already in hand.

That is a wholly different process from buying a Navigo weekly pass (Navigo Semaine in French) directly on your phone -- in this case, there is no physical fare media / Navigo Découverte involved at all.

Individuals living outside Europe are geoblocked from establishing IDF Mobilités accounts. Navigo Découverte cards (5€) are no longer sold at the airports.

Solutions for those wanting to obtain the weekly Navigo pass and use it immediately upon airport arrival:

  1. If you know how to use a VPN, electronically locate yourself in France, then setup your account.

  2. There is free internet access at the airport, you can setup an account on your mobile phone as soon as you arrive.

  3. Use your existing Navigo Découverte card and load a weekly fare at the airport. The ND cards have a 10 year life.

Otherwise, you will need to purchase the Navigo Découverte card once you arrive in Paris.

I am not sure for whom the weekly pass is designed. Residents certainly have better options than a weekly pass. I should think that most using public transportation often have annual passes; or those traveling less often use the Navigo Liberté card.

The Navigo Découverte is a physical card on which you can load passes

From this statement by Andrew, it sounds like the OP, or anyone visiting Paris, can take a taxi from the airport to the hotel, then go to the nearest metro station and purchase an actual hard card on which we can put a pass. These can be used for metros, buses and/or trams, correct?

In my case, I'm only in Paris from Saturday afternoon to Monday afternoon, so certainly a day pass for Sunday is in order. I'll probably get one for Monday as well since I'll be traveling from one side of the city to the other. I was going to download an app or try to set up my apple pay, but at this point I'd rather just get a card and use it. Saturday I'll probably just walk everywhere.

The day pass (12€), as well as airport tickets (13€), may be loaded onto a Navigo Easy card (2€), which are still sold at either of the CDG RATP stations. It is only the sale of the Navigo Découverte card which is being withheld at airports.
