ID required with Passe Sanitaire?

Hey everyone! We leave for Paris and then Provence in a few days. We both have received our QR codes and uploaded them into the #tousanticovid app. For those that have used this recently, are you also having to show ID when presenting the certificate on the app? Normally when we travel we carry our ID (passports) in a secure waist money belt since we don't usually need to pull them out but want to carry in case we do need them and so want to keep them secure from pickpockets and purse thieves. This isn't going to be convenient if we're having to pull them out everywhere we go though. In this case, will they accept a photo copy or smartphone pic of the passport? Or does it have to be the real thing? I'm worried about our passports getting stolen, that would be a real bummer to say the least. Thanks in advance for the help.

In most European countries, you must carry identification with you at all times. Passports are good, driver's licenses are also good, as is any government ID. There is a second requirement for aliens, that typically only immigration offers involved themselves with, to prove you are in the country legally. To meet this second requirement, only a passport with its integral pages of entry stamps can prove you are legally in the country. Photo copies are pointless.

In a practical sense, many carry a government ID and leave passports in the hotel safe. If anyone needs proof of legal entry, your passport is never far away, and no one wants to risk losing his passport.

Realistically, I just use the TousAntiCovid app and have never been questioned further.

@Tocard I have traveled abroad many, many times pre-COVID and I understand the rules and what is acceptable and general practice, which is exactly why I carry the passport in my money belt - in case it is needed while also protecting against theft. I just need to know if I will be required to show it every time I have to show proof of vaccination, because in that case retrieving it from the money belt just isn't practical as I don't want to be doing a partial strip-tease everywhere I go. One possibility is keeping it in the money belt and having a photo copy or picture on hand to show in these situations, if ID is required and that is acceptable. That is what I was asking, sorry if I wasn't clear. (Regarding US driver's license, my experience has been these are not acceptable. At least I've never had it accepted as ID abroad, they have wanted to see the passport.)

I will use my DL if asked for ID -- If it proves to be an issue, I will start carrying the passport but the risk of loss of passport has lead me to stow it at the apartment and carry copies in the past. If it is actually demanded, I will re evaluate that.

@ copperheadpdx - I´m sorry, I thought I was clear; I have never needed to show any proof of vaccination and/or ID other than showing my TousAntiCovid app, nor have I heard of anyone needing to show more than just the complete TousAntiCovid app. However, I do carry ID just in case.

Restaurant and venue owners/operators don't really want to be in the enforcement business. As long as you have the app, I doubt anyone will require more.

Just back from month traveling through France. The only time I had to show an ID (my passport) with my Passe Sanitaire was when boarding an intra-EU flight departing from France. Restaurants, museums, INOUI TGV, etc, only wanted to see my Passe Sanitaire, not my ID with it.

I have never been asked for ID with the Pass.

Cafés, restaurants, and the like actually do not have the right to ask for ID when checking passe sanitaire. Unsure about museums, but I guess it is the same. You will not need to pull out your passport.

Thanks so much everyone! Sounds like we'll be ok to leave our passports tucked away in our money belts. Thanks!

They should ask for an I.d. to confirm that you aren’t carrying around someone else’s pass sanitaire — but I haven’t been asked for an I.d. a single time yet.

I have been asked for a supplemental identification card to go with the vaccination code on the TousAntiCovid app only once -- at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. Every other time I've been asked to show my vaccination code, just the code has been required.

I agree with Kim though: they should ask for that, but they usually don't.

I’ve been in France, Italy and Switzerland in the past two weeks and only in Switzerland did they ask for ID with the pass.

We’ve been asked for our Pass Sanitaire continuously - restaurants, museums, even our Paris hotel. But no one has asked for ID to go with it.

Didn't get mine until 2 days before our return so only used it twice - the Louvre and the Saint Chapelle. They didn't ask for any ID. I did have a color copy of my passport and my actual drivers license for the Saint Chapelle as there was concern that I'd need to show it because the chapel is right next to the judiciary building where a big trial for the 2015 terrorist attacks is being held. The Ile de Cite was swarming with police and there was only one access point to get to the chapel - right in front of Notre Dame. Got to practice my french on several gendarmes trying to find the way but none ever asked for ID.

ID is required only for people who look suspicious.

Perhaps that was a joke, but no, it was being asked of everyone attempting to enter the museum. Granted, this was only a couple of days after the requirement went in place, and perhaps the museum has relaxed its methods since then, but that was the case in late July.

Janet, I too have only carried my drivers license and sometimes a photocopy of my passport when out and about in Europe. It always seems safer to leave my passport in the apartment. I do wear a money belt but find that the bulkiness of the passport makes doing so more comfortable. I'm hoping that I won't need to carry a passport with me while walking around the streets of Paris or other parts of France in the future. I'm just more nervous about everything since the advent of Covid and all the accompanying restrictions.
