Hello fro Wisconsin,

Have you ever tried the free apps available on-line that translate immediately. We used that for a long conversation with a woman in a small village in the Czech Republic. Seems you need wifi for the good quick translation. You speak into your phone and it translates so you can listen. We had many laughs making it work, but it did work.

If you won't have a working phone you cousin will likely have one.

We used Google Translate and that worked well.

I would love an app that allowed you to take a picture of words and then translate them

Well, the latest version of Google translate allows typed entry, Speech, and visual translation. You do not even need to take a picture, just view the words through the camera, the image will show translation.

In my experience, it is good for plain text, odd fonts cause problems, plus you have to consider the application. For example many dishes on a menu are not easily translated, Fettuccine Alfredo probably comes up something like Alfred's Noodles, and I suppose slang and technical jargon suffer, but so far looks good.

Andrew, in general you are probably correct, however OP has a specific hurdle to deal with

On a recent trip to France (Normandy), we found English speaking French people to be in the minority unless they were employed at a major tourist attraction. I wish I had learned more French before I went.
