I Know it's Probably Crazy, But...

Hey everyone, fairly new here and I'm planning the final details of our upcoming trip to Paris/London this July. We will be in France for a total of 7 days prior to heading to the UK for the remainder of our trip. We are a family of 3 and this will be our first trip to France (though we have some travel experience in Asia).

I'm trying to figure out the logistics of getting out of Paris and seeing a few sites in the countryside during our trip, but I'm a bit overwhelmed by our options. Here's my plan thus far. We will arrive in Paris on a Monday around lunch, clear customs, head to our hotel and get checked in. Tuesday-Thursday we'll spend in Paris seeing a number of the major attractions and I'm fairly comfortable with my planning for those days.

It's actually Friday-Monday that I'm struggling with. Here are my thoughts. We would like to rent a car Friday morning and do a loop before returning the car Sunday night. Maybe see Versailles on Friday, see a couple of Chateaux's on Saturday, see Mont. Saint Michel on Sunday and drive back to Paris that night to go to Disneyland on Monday. I know it's a lot of driving and it would be a couple of long days, but we're type A on vacation and typically run from morning to night.

I think this plan will work, but the transportation is what is confusing me. I was thinking about renting a car before going to Versailles (so we would have a place to store our bags in the trunk), see Versailles on Friday and driving closer to the Loire Valley that evening. Spend the night nearby a couple of the Chateaux's, see them Sat. morning/afternoon, then drive near to MSM and spend the night there and see the area Sat. evening/Sun. morning before driving back to Paris.

What would be the best way to do this? Rent a car in Paris? Take the train to Versailles and rent a car there? Then where to return it Sunday night? Near Disneyland? Or somewhere else and then take a train? Any help appreciated...thanks!

You can very easily do Versailles as a day trip from Paris. And you can reach the St Pierre des Corps station in Tours (for the Loire) by train in a little over an hour. You could pick up your car there and visit a couple of nearby Chateaux that day. The only problem I see (other than exhaustion) is dropping off the car on a Sunday. Many rental offices will be closed, other than those at airports. Are you spending Sunday night in Paris, or near Disneyland?

The plan is to stay near Disneyland if possible. What would I do with our luggage while at Versailles? Are there lockers at the station?

Do Versailles as a day trip Wednesday or Thursday, then you don't have to worry about luggage and it maybe a little less busy than a weekend.

I feel like a choice of focus would help make this feel less crazy. If you’re going to see Versailles, then I would pass on the Loire this time around. Use those days to explore Brittany or Normandy around Mont Saint Michel. Versailles is the ultimate chateau, and the Loire feels like more of the same this time around. Or if you’re set on the Loire then I would skip Versailles. Either way it’s “sight overlap.” If you choose Versailles, absolutely just use public transit from Paris. It’s too easy not to. You can pick up a rental in Versailles and continue from there too.

Imo, Versailles is such an easy trip from Paris that if you really want to get out of Paris, then it’s an easy thing to save for another time. It may seem crazy to say about the greatest palace in Europe, but these are the choices we have to make sometimes.

And Versailles can be SO crowded. Save it for a trip in shoulder season.

I would do the trips that are easy from Paris as day trips: Versailles and Disneyland. Limit your time packing g/moving/unpacking in an already super short timeframe. Then decide on one outlier location: either MSM or Loire.

Have you mapped out the drive from Loire to MSM?
Pretty far if you plan to spend day visiting chateaus. Each one can take several hours

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the advice here. Trying to change some of our hotel plans in Paris to accommodate the new plans, and I'm running into some issues. Assuming I can resolve them, I might have a few additional questions, but for now thanks.

Be prepared for massive traffic jams heading toward the Paris region on a Sunday, especially as vacationers are returning home in July. You will also have trouble finding a car rental that is open on a Sunday for safely returning your car You are better off keeping your Paris hotel and going to Versaille for a day, Disney for a day, one other place for a day, if you don't find enough to do in Paris. Then start planning your next trip where you can give the Loire and Normandy the time they deserve.

Hello,
I have had no fear of driving in large European cities, but Paris...I tried to rent a car out of the tourist area to make things easier for our exit. Let us just say, we got lucky. I would not recommend renting in the city.

Several places you mention are doable with a simple train ride.

As for the Dordogne. I understand the interest and historical significance of this river. All those castles looking across the water at each other. But it is 6 hours by car with out adding toilet, gas, or food stops. That is a lot of driving, 12 hours, a whole day. Maybe on a different trip.

Mount St. Micheal is also a bit out of the way.

If you rent a car out of Paris, returning it to the airport is fairly easy. The rental return is the same for all agencies and it is well signposted.
