I have only two days: stay in Strasbourg or Colmar?

Hi,

If you only had two days to spend in either Strasbourg or Colmar, which would it be if you've never been to either? Also, one of those days will be Easter Sunday next April 2026. Unfortunately, we do not have time to extend our stay as we our on our way to Switzerland.

I currently have us booked in Strasbourg at the Cour du Corbeau Hotel.

Many thanks!

Why not both? They’re only 30 minutes apart by train, which runs pretty much on the half hour all day and evening. One day in each.

I spent a couple days in both this spring, and if I had to choose just one, I would pick Strasbourg. But like the previous poster said you could always take the quick train to Colmar for a quick visit. I found Strasbourg delightful. It's fun to get lost in the back streets and just stroll along the river. Enjoy!

We stayed in both last year and liked Colmar (a town) 100x more than Strasbourg (a city). Lots of homeless people and people hassling us for money in Strasbourg. I grew up in France and was not expecting this in Strasbourg. Your experience may be different from ours though.

We stayed in Colmar for a week + last September, and did a number of day trips throughout the Alsace region, including one to Strasbourg. We preferred the smaller villages, and after so many days of the small charming ones, Strasbourg reminded us a lot of Paris! We enjoyed our day trip there, but were happy to return to the quieter small town vibe and the really charming canals and paths through Colmar. That was really what we were seeking for our whole trip - smaller villages and more time to explore in a leisurely way.

A few years ago we stayed in Strasbourg for a few nites and did a day trip to Colmar. We really enjoyed Strasbourg and if doing the trip again would do it the same way. With only 2 days in Strasbourg and assuming one of them is your arrival day then you may find plenty to do in Strasbourg alone for 1.5 days.

Flip a coin. Heads you win, tails you win. Either is nice and which to visit is a personal preference.

We spent 1 day in Strasbourg and 2 nights in Colmar in May and have Strasbourg on the list for an extended stay in the future. As mentioned, it is an easy train ride between the two if you want to spend an afternoon in the other but I could easily find 2 days worth of things to see in Strasbourg.

Thank you for all of your responses. I think we will just stay in Strasbourg for the two nights. Kind regards.

We've experienced none of this the past three days.

jph, that’s Fantastic that the officials in Strasbourg got rid of the problems we saw and experienced when we were there!! That’s great news!!
Would be nice if they could fo the same here in the US.

Perhaps I left the wrong impression. Are there beggars and homeless in Strasbourg? Sure, just as there are in every French city and town I've visited, and even in Geneva. But I've never been "hassled" by anyone. Then again, my response to appeals for cash is to ignore them. None of these folks has pursued me further. I'm not sure French laws entitle their officials to prevent panhandling. No European nation that I've visited more than briefly has been free of panhandlers. They were neither more nor less prevalent in Strasbourg than elsewhere.

As for the US and especially San Francisco, the open drug use and results of that are everywhere. I agree it's a very sad situation. The physician community needs to do better at employing the anti-addiction medications that have been available for years, though I don't claim they're a sufficient solution.
