I have apartment location, but will I like it?

We booked a LEGAL apartment for Christmas week on boulevard Beaumarchais in the 3rd arr., and looks like it's across the street from the 11th. The nearest Metro station is Saint-Sebastien-Froissart but also appears almost as close to Chemin Vert.

We'd wanted to rent an apartment in the heart of Le Marais, but for various reasons too detailed to bore you with, this is the closest we could get to the heart of the Marais while still having everything we need in an apartment that is available for our exact travel dates. I did an exhaustive search through numerous reputable companies.

We are hoping to be able walk to as much as possible, to stroll the streets to soak in the ambiance, eat and drink in little cafes, and so on. This will be my wife and me with our two teenagers. I realize we will use the Metro to get to many of the classic tourist venues in town, but we were also hoping to "live" somewhere with some charm of its own and, like I said, to be able to comfortably walk around those neighborhoods as part of our enjoyment. We are hoping to not be too far from the charming cliche of Paris we have been dreaming of. (And being able to walk to the river would be/would have been very nice, too.)

So, with this little you know about me, and especially our desire to have been more in the heart of the Marais and nearer the river, are we still in a location that will satisfy us, or should I prepare for a bit of a letdown? These may seem silly questions to those who know the area, but this is the sort of question I can't answer for myself from guidebooks and Google Earth.

Thank you very much for any guidance you can offer.

Absolutely nothing to worry about. You're safely in tourist central with the option, if you're feeling more adventuresome, of crossing the street into the 11th to walk to the Richard Lenoir/Bastille market and perhaps into the 12th for the marche d' Aligre. It would be a shame to limit yourself to the Marais with its crowds when there's so much else in your area of stay.

One of the things I like about the area is it's not in "tourist central" so you'll have more of an opportunity to enjoy it as a local. Incidentally, there's an excellent restaurant a few blocks away on Rue Oberkampf called Les Petits Papiers. It's small, not local not touristy and chef/owner Thierry does an outstanding job. If you go, make reservations and as a history lesson, you might want to pass the infamous Bataclan, just around the corner on Blvd. Voltaire.

if you have never been to Paris then this will not be a let down; do not believe everything you have heard or read about in English about staying in the Marais.

Just goes to show that what Paris residents call Tourist Central is different from that called Tourist Central by visitors.

Merci! So happy to get such quick and such encouraging replies! I'm hoping for even more ideas and suggestions, of course, but I'm thankful for what you've already given me. :-)

This is a GREAT location, so many great places around there. Make sure to check out Marché des Enfants Rouges . . .

To me this is much more interesting than the "heart" of the Marais, while being really nearby. Honestly, it's a great spot.

I remember blvd Beaumarchais as a fairly quiet main drag . . . hardly anyone out walking late at night that except right near the Place de la Republique or the Place de la Bastille. There might be traffic noise, but even if you're facing the street, in December, you won't have the windows open. You'll right on the edge of the Marais to the west. The Place des Vosges is about a 10 minute walk from St Sebastien metro, Picasso Museum about 1/2 that.

You will be right on the northeastern edge of the Marais. I own an apartment on the southeastern edge of Le Marais and I prefer your location (and mine) to being in the very center of Le Marais, which I find to be dark and super crowded at pretty much all times. You'll be able to walk to lots of places. My apartment is currently being renovated but I walked from Hotel Monge on Rue Monge in the Latin Quarter to the apartment last week in about 20 minutes. It would be another 10 minutes to the Chemin-Vert metro station. You could walk to Pont de Sully from Chemin Vert in about 20 minutes . The other thing that I like about the area of your apartment is that you can walk 5 to 10 minutes to Bastille metro station and there have access to Metro lines 1, 5 and 8. If you are into great restaurants, some of the best that I have found in Paris are in the 11th so all in all you are in a great area. I think you will be happy with your choice from a location perspective.
