I Am In Paris!

My writing skills are no match for CW Social or Mike Beebe, but I will share with you my current trip and emotional musings.

In the Spring of this year I was facing some musculoskeletal health problems and any future travel plans had to be placed on hold. I was depressed and unhealthy. In a way, I am grateful for this as it helped me prioritize my life and my behaviors. I learned that a life without travel was not going to satisfy me. I pulled myself up by the bootstraps and got myself rehabilitated. As soon as I knew I could handle the physical rigors of travel I bought my airfare. It was the shortest lead time before any past trips, only 12 weeks.

My favorite place on the planet to visit is Paris. I had another thread about choosing a second city. DS chose Nice.

We arrived at CDG this morning at 5:39 and we're at the taxi stand by 6:50. We checked into our hotel around 8:00.

Congratulations on prioritizing and improving your health. Happy you didn’t let it get past the point of no return.
When my husband experienced congestive heart failure, and after we passed the danger point, I selflessly thought, I hope we can still travel. Luckily my husband took the warning and improved his health with diet, exercise and no alcohol or caffeine. Was it hard, yes, but the thought of a retirement without travel got him moving.
Enjoy Paris!

packing
I pack pretty light, less than 20 pounds and carry an Osprey backpack and a medium Tim Bihn messenger bag. However, this trip will include some French flea markets, so between the two of us, we brought 5 bags. The two above, my son's Osprey, a hard shell small carry on sized bag and a nylon shoulder bag. I brought an extra pair of slacks. I brought my usual 5 tops, but 3 of them light sweaters with 3 silk undershirts so that I will be doing less sink washing. DS packed his 3 usual slacks but added a pair of shorts for Nice and a few extra tops. Despite my heavy packing we had 4 tiny bags and my purse. Because we had an extra bag, we checked 3 of them. The agent actually thanks us for having such light bags! It took us about an extra 15 minutes to collect our bags. They were in the first bunch on the carousel due to having sky priority with Delta.

CDG
The lines through immigration weren't bad. They are pushing facial recognition. Philosophically, I am against it, but practically I am not. Persons my age and older were having a lot of difficulties managing the "self service" technology, so an attendant was there to help people figure out the machines and it kept the line moving. An agent stamped our passports, it there were no questions about the reason for our visit or the name of our hotel, or sufficient funds or proof of a ticket home.

Transportation
We flew Delta comfort plus from CLE to ATL. One hour 14 minutes layover which was scary for me but worked out perfectly. There was just enough time for a comfort stop. Then we had premium select seats for the international trip. I continue to feel this is with the money. I find the food on Delta to be terrible. From now on I will bring sandwiches on the plane.

Taxi
We took a taxi from the airport for the Euro 65 flat fee. Of note, the driver didn't want anything to do with my attempt at French. "Show me the address in your phone please" I felt a bit of revenge when he misread the address as dix-huit (18l rue Vaugirard instead of un B. He ended up dropping us off a block from the hotel.

I have a Navigo Decouverte card from my first time in Paris in 2022. I brought tiny photos of my son. I had such a a great experience at the metro. My son got hit very hard with jet lag and a bad tummy, so after I slept for three hours I went out into the city.without him. I stopped at Odeon metro stop. I again attempted French and it went better. Unfortunately, his equipment was broken and he couldn't sell me a new card or apply the weekly pass to mine. His associate came out of the booth and added the pass to my card at the machine, walked up the stairs with me to street level, and pointed out the two closest stations to buy a new card. This was done in some French and some English. Tres genial! Where are these rude Parisians I have heard about?

Hotel
We are staying at Hotel Trianon Rive Gauche. I had trouble finding a hotel room in September with only 12 weeks lead time. I generally stay in small, 3* hotels, but I couldn't find a room with 2 separate beds. I booked the executive room which is HUGE compared to the rooms I have seen in Paris. We are on the 8th floor and have a lovely view of Sacre Coeur and we can see the tour Eiffel if you put your head out the window. It is expensive by my standards, but I am very happy so far.

I got DS to eat 1/3 of a sandwich and water and Coke. He is back to sleeping like a baby. I am going back out and will visit Jardin du Luxembourg and maybe have some tea and a taste citron at Bread and Roses.

More tomorrow.

How exciting! So happy for you and DS. Btw, your writing skills are great. Hope DS recovers soon and is out and about in Paris. I'm glad you found your inner strength to push past the depression. You are reaping your rewards!

Oh gosh!!! Yea! What a fun time so far!

I just looked at your hotel location. IF you have a lovely day and are near the hotel for lunch I love eating at La Terrasse de Madame in the Lux Gardens right near the Medici Fountain! Others here on the forum enjoy Au Petit Suisse although I've not eaten there.

Are you interested in Roman stuff? There is a Roman Well right across from you in the Place de Sorbonne.

"Gallo-Roman well -place de la Sorbonne
Towards the middle of the square, you will see a round decorative pond with a smaller circle
just to the north of it, this covered with a metal grill. The grill covers a well which was once
part of a Gallo-Roman ‘island” of housing.
"

And some remains of the Roman Forum, underground going to the parking garage entrance:

"Remnant of the Forum 61, boulevard St. Michel
As you head north on the boulevard St. Michel, you will see an entrance to the parking
structure across from number 61. Go in and downstairs to see a block of stone from the
foundation of the Forum.
"

Possibly more than you wanted to know, hahaha!!

Have a fabulous time!

Hi vandabrud we are currently at 4 rue Vaugirard, stones throw from the Lux Gardens entrance. Couple of breakfast places we have enjoyed are Le Danton and Le Hibou. Did not care so much for Au Petit Suisse.

Good for you for getting your health and life in order so that you can do what you love to do the most.
I'm sure that it was challenging but you had the best incentive in my opinion!
Paris is also my happy place.
I will enjoy reading about your experience on this trip. I'll be there myself in a few weeks!

Paris motivates me all the time. I’m excited to arrive tomorrow to start my one month stay. This will be my 9th trip there and it’s the longest. My current trip is for 11 weeks and we are seeing new places, but if I could only travel to one location for the rest of my life it would be Paris.

I haven't posted in a few days due to immediately falling asleep when I get back to my room!

On Tuesday, DS was still not feeling well. We did go on our Paris Walks tour of the Marais. He did need to vomit during the walk. We stopped at Au Bourguinon du Marais restaurant and they let him use the bathroom, no problem. After our walk I got him to eat a handful of calories at Cafe Victor Hugo at Place de Vosges. I dropped him off at the hotel and I spent the afternoon exploring the 6th arr. I had a snack at Bread and Roses. DS wanted a kebob for supper and we walked to Anatolie Durum. We were able to use a few Turkish phrases we could remember from 2019.

On Wednesday, we spent the morning and early afternoon in Montmartre, sticking to the side streets to avoid the masses. We went on another Paris Walk. One touristy site we enjoyed was a tuxedo cat resting on an accordion while it was being played by his human. So cute. We had lunch at Coq et Fils, which is right next to the Des Galettes Windmill. I highly recommend! We took a short nap and in the early evening walked along the Seine enjoying the bridges and view of Notre Dame. We am had dinner at Les Fous de l'ile. I enjoyed the foie gras and salmon. After dinner we walked another hour enjoying Paris in the dark.

Today is the strike and we aren't sure if we will be able to keep our appointment at the consultation room in the Louvre or visit the d'Orsay.

I will let you know!

@Pam, I have visited the well several times!
@Katheryine, we are so close!

Les Fous de l'ile

Nice place with good food. Did your son enjoy all the chicken caricatures in national stereotypes (American: Ten gallon hat and six shooter)?

"@Pam, I have visited the well several times!"

hahahaha!!

Yea! Hope your son is feeling better!

I agree with Andrea...if I could visit only one place for the rest of my life it would be Paris. Or Yellowstone, lol.

Great news! We were able to keep our appointment at the Louvre! I will describe on the other thread.

We had a lot of cafe time today. We hung out at the Carousel in the morning. The strike affected our bus route so we walked to the Louvre.

Afterwards we took metro line 1 to the Charles De Gaulle etoile. This line is automatic, so no strike issues, although the Concorde stop was closed. We had adult beverages at Cafe l'etoile 1903. We walked a long ways up Ave de Wagram looking for a street sale but never found it. We shared a Croq Madame and fries at Le Bouquet Wagram. I never had a reason to be in this neighborhood before and we enjoyed watching young children go about their after school activities with their nannies. We also saw about 15 golden retrievers.

My legs are tired by now and a lot of transportation is disrupted, so we used the G7 app to take a taxi to Musee d,'Orsay. Our tickets were for 6;30. We spent about 2 hours before running out of steam. It was a bit disappointing that the Seurat exhibition was closed as DS likes pointillism. We found a working bus 84 to get back near the hotel

We were too tired to eat dinner!

This morning we are headed to the Army museum and a vide grenier.
