Are there good ways to visit Facteur Cheval’s 'Palais Ideal' without a car? The only route I can find is train to Saint-Vallier-sur-Rhône, then bus or taxi to Hauterives. But there are hardly any buses and I can’t estimate the taxi fare. Are there alternatives? Is it practicable and pleasant to stay in Hauterives overnight? Any guidance much appreciated.

It looks quite difficult to get there without a car.
The website says they have been closed for the last 2 weeks. Maybe try contacting them next week when they reopen and see if they can suggest how to get there on your specific date.

It is not possible to get to the Palais without a car.

Here are the official taxi fares in this region:
- Pickup fee: €2.34
- €1.17/km for a round trip during the day, Monday to Saturday inclusive.
- €2.36/km applicable for a one-way trip during the day, Monday to Saturday inclusive (taxi returns without passengers).
- Waiting time: €29.60 per hour

Keep in mind that in rural areas, taxis are mainly used for medical transport. Don't be surprised to see references to ambulance transport, you will get a "normal" vehicle. Taxis should be booked in advance if possible.
If you are unable to book a taxi yourself (website in French, drivers not speaking English), ask your hotel.
