How to use moneybelt when going through security checks?

Hi,
I purchased a money belt. I know that you have to put the belt underneath your shirt in order to make sure nobody steals the belt.

When you have to go through security check for places like the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, etc, do you guys have to remove the money belt and show it to the security guard. The problem that I have with that is that if I show the money belt to the guard, other people will see the belt and they will try to steal my belt. Then this will ruin the whole purpose of the belt. For those who had the money belt during the trip in Paris, how did you resolve this issue? Can I go through security to attractions in Paris without me removing my money belt?

Thank you so much for your help.

" Can I go through security to attractions in Paris without me removing my money belt"

Yes, just as long as there is nothing in it that would set off an alarm.

Erm... Security check comes with security guards. The chance of someone sneaking in and taking the money belt from the little basket in which you put small items is basically zero. Simply stay close to the security check area when putting it back on!
Or, as the poster above said, make sure there aren't any coins and keys in there and keep it on.
(Personally I think you don't need a money belt, I've lived here for 30 years and never got anything stolen from me. A small cross body bag worn in the front will be more comfortable and more convenient. I would only advise a money belt if you're taking overnight buses perhaps).

The money belt I use is the one sold here by the RS store. It is silk and has nylon zippers. I do not put metal objects in it. I have paper money and my passport and maybe a couple other pieces of paper in it. Never been an issue going through the security checks with the belt on.

And no, there is not a crowd of thieves hanging out by the security check points waiting to see who has a money belt on to rob later.

Edit: This is ONLY for the security used to get into museums and such. Not talking about airports. Airports it is better to not have the money belt on until after final security check.

It depends whether or not you go thru the nude scope vs the metal detector. Logan Airport, my airport, uses the nude scope for non-TSA Precheck so you must take the money belt off before going through, regardless of metal content. My international airline use to not be in the TSA Precheck program, so when traveling solo, if I had a money belt, I had it in my personal item. I pack the money belt in my personal item at home and only remove it when I am through all my security checks...so often when I land at my destination, after picking up my checked bag, I would put it on in the ladies room.

I would not use a money belt while touring but only in transit then put your valuables in the safe and carry only the minimal. I have occasionally used one where I didn't have a safe and have had not issues in security; I just leave it on. The only place I have had to actually remove it was at airport security. a money belt is not a purse, it is a body safe and so you shouldn't need one just touring but only when you have no safe place to stow valuables. We always try to make sure hotels have safes and usually can.

The two pieces of "security" I wear are not on me until I clear the security checks, be it TSA or those in Europe.

For Paris I wear the "hidden pocket" made by Eagle Creek and also " the :neck pouch" if it doesn't become too uncomfortable due to the heat.

Bottom line...after clearing security , duck into a WC to put them on.

Money-belt-all-the-time traveler here -- except going through airport security, where it goes in the bottom of my personal item.

Museums not usually a problem.

Agree with just wearing it through Museum security. The scanners they use mostly pick up phones or keys in people's pockets.

On one of my first trips to Paris I was standing in line to enter Sainte-Chapelle for the evening concert. I was first in line and chatting with the security guy at the door. When he opened the door he pointed me toward the scanners and said "By the way, you can leave your money belt on". I just laughed! He said security guards could almost always tell when someone was wearing a money belt and they generally regard them as no problem.

Its usually a metal detector, not an x-ray or airport-type whole body scanner. So, no metal.

I have always worn a money belt when going to Europe. I have always left it on going through airport security and no one has said anything about it. I never have any metal in it, only credit cards and some paper money.

What I do is leave my money belt in the the box at home in the States where it has been since I bought it over a decade ago.

Seriously, if it weren't for Rick Steves promoting them, I don't think anyone would wear these foolish things. Certainly none of the locals do. There are plenty of other practical options for not having your money stolen, and don't ever walk about with your passport unless you are going somewhere where it is required (i.e, an airport).

No, it doesn't. The money belt is effective not because it is hidden from view but because no one can access it without you knowing about it. There are plenty of secure ways to store valuables that are not the money belt.

the money belt is useful in transit because it cannot be taken without assaulting you which is not a real problem in Western Europe. Purses, computer bags and other secure bags can be stolen much more easily. I once sat across from a woman on a train in Italy who put her purse in her seat as she stood in the aisle putting her bag in the overhead rack. While she was doing this, her purse was stolen by one of the thieves who board the train and then wander down the aisle grabbing what they can and leaving the train before anyone notices.

I know someone who had a computer bag stolen from at their feet at a hotel check in. Hotel lobbies are hunting grounds for thieves as people feel safe there and have their valuables with them checking in and out.

What locals do is irrelevant. Locals are not wandering around Paris with their passports, all their credit cards, and all their travel money. I only use them in transit but it means I don't have to worry about my papers and money and can make sure my computer and similar valuables are under control as well as keep an eye on my luggage. Losing stuff is also a lot less onerous if you are in your home town than if you are traveling; it is a real pain to replace a passport. Thieves don't really want them, they want money, credit cards and phones -- but if they get them, they just throw them away.

If it just has cash and debit cards in it, you shouldn't need to take it off and put it through separately. My husband wore his and didn't take it off ever or have it be a problem.

I think the best technique is to duck into a toilet before security to remove the money belt and put it in your carry on. After security, reverse the process.
