How to get SNCF Advantage prices from the US?

  1. Is there any way to get the SNCF Advantage card and use it when booking from the US? On sncf-connect.com I can select the ticket and even add the card, but it won't take my payment from the US. On thetrainline.com I could use an Advantage code if I had one, but how do I just buy the card? My trip is in July, but I really want to book ahead because I have a pretty specific schedule.

  2. If I give up and buy a ticket without a discount code, how do I know which way the diagram is facing when I'm selecting my seat? I have to ride facing forward, but I can't figure out the diagram.

Update in case anyone else needs this info: I ended up using sncf-connect.com. The problem turned out to be between VISA and my bank. I had to talk to the bank's fraud department. There was no setting or anything specific they had to enable; they just had me try the transaction again while we were talking, and they basically just "held its hand" as it went through.

Is this the website you are using.

https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en

I created an account and recently purchased several tickets. Also, contact your credit card company. They may be blocking your purchase.

Seat61.com sometimes has the train seat configuration and which way you are facing.

As far as question 2, it is often not possible to specify the direction the seat is facing, as TGVs are train sets with a driver car on each end with 8 carriages in between and can easily go in either direction. If traveling with a partner, my solution is tom pick seats facing each other across a table. My wife hates traveling "backwards", but I don't mind, so we just switch as needed. Not so much in France, but in Germany and Italy, trains often change directions several times on a long haul as they call at terminal type stations. For instance, going from Turin to Naples, the train direction will change 3 times, at Milano Centrale, Firenze S.M.N. and Roma Termini.

@jehb2, Thank you for that info -- I'm glad to know it ought to work! I will follow up with my bank.

@Sam, 🤦‍♀️ That is completely obvious now that you've said it. Thank you!

Note the TGV tickets are available to book 90 days out.

I ended up using sncf-connect.com.

Were you able to get the card too?

I am trying to get the MAX Senior one for my wife and me. However, I have 4 problems: 1) The country for our addresses is set as US in the accounts, but it is shown as France in the purchase form and cannot be changed. 2) Our birthdates are incorrect by 1 day and cannot be changed. 3) I cannot enter our US mobile numbers as they do not fit the form’s required format. 4) They only accept payment by bank. Amex is listed and we have a business checking account, but when we choose it, the form says there is an error.

It seems more likely to work in the app, as if I say that I have the card, I don't have to enter a number to see the prices. I then get an option to buy the card, followed by it asking if I want to use my account info (correct DOB, address with no country, and start date), I get "Sorry, an error has occurred Please try again later." I get the same error if I advance to the page to change info.

Any workarounds?

I am almost sure the Max Senior (since it renews automatically each month for €79) is meant for French residents, and that they only accept European bank accounts with IBAN/ RIB for payment.

The minimum subscription is 3 months, after which time you can unsubscribe for a 15-euro fee.

Thanks, Kim! That explains a lot and would have been nice if SNCF had mentioned that.

This is not the case for the Carte Advantage Senior, which I just purchased with no issues.

I've used the Carte Advantage Senior in the past as a US tourist. I assume that is still possible. I bought the card in France.
