I am going to buy entrance tickets and train tickets very soon for a day trip to Giverny from Paris, and I am trying to plan for how much time I am likely to spend there and then add up all the time to determine which train to select for my return trip.
My question is, if you went to Giverny, how much time did you spend there? It will be just me so i have flexibility to meet just my own interest.
Also I saw one previous responder suggest purchasing the train-to-garden (and return) shuttle tickets ahead of time as well. Did you do that? Thanks for helping me plan my trip!
Hi. I toured the house, the gravesite, went on the bridge, visited the gift shop one July a few years ago. I personally think 2-3 hours is a good amount of time. Enjoy!!
I went last October. I took the 10:11 outbound train to Vernon (it was the direct train...did not need to change) and the 16:51 return train to Paris. It was dark by that time so if you are going soon you will have a lot more daylight than I did.
I did not buy my shuttle tickets ahead, you can purchase them from the bus driver with apple pay or another contactless CC. The shuttle buses were out of sync as our train was delayed leaving Paris due to a signaling problem on the line. I was with friends and we wound up using BOLT, the shared car app, to return from the gardens.
After arriving in Vernon about noon, we ate lunch at Les Nympheas which is right at the entrance to the House/garden complex. Our entry tickets were for 130 and we made that easily.
We enjoyed the gardens and the house but did not walk down Main Street. Some spent some time in the gift shop.
So...4 hours for lunch, the gardens and the house for us. I've been before on my own and spent more time walking around town, visiting the church where Monet and his family are buried, etc. To me, 4-5 hours is good including a meal.
I'll add that the train station in Vernon is one of the few places I needed coins for the bathrooms.
If you are concerned about miscalculating your return time, I would suggest downloading the SNCF app and planning to purchase your return ticket while at Giverny/Vernon as you see how the day is progressing for you.
This is a TER train (regional), which are generally fixed price, so most often there aren't advantages to buying early. (Yes, there are sometimes "promotions" on specific trains.)
Very much depends on the person, their interest in gardens, their interest in art, the weather, the crowds, and if you also visit the church, graveyard or have a meal while there. We were last there from opening until midafternoon on a late August day. But we had a car.
I think 2-3 hours is about right. What time of year are you going? I was on a tour and I remember I finished the garden, the house, the wonderful gift shop and had time to walk around the little town and grab something to eat.
So many great and quickly provided suggestions. Thank you. I think i will go with the plan to buy the return ticket on line while i am at Giverny and have a better idea of how I am doing and my level of interest in hanging out at the church and elsewhere in town a little. Great helpful info on there being a restaurant near the entrance and of course the info on needing coins to operate a classic ‘ ‘la porte de la toilette’ at the train station is especially valuable! 😄 (please forgive my likely incorrect French) . As for timing, I am going later this month.
We visited last month and it was lovely! Go as early as you can because it got very busy very quickly. 2-3 hours sounds good.
I was there Aprl 4. Every school student from various countries were there on a senior field. There were a couple of cruise lines tour group, multiple Japanese tour group, a couple of German tour groups while I was there after arriving on the 10:11 train. It was boob and butt movement through the house. The garden paths were jammed. The busses, don't get me started on the busses!
I would go as late in the day as possible. Going as early as you can runs you into all the crowds. Everyone, groups, tours are generally all scheduled early in the day, I go to the Gardens every time I am in Paris and even my 1pm entry was not late enough. Take a mid morning train and wander the area outside the Garden, have lunch there and then do a late entry, preferably after 2pm. Just my recent experience to recommend a late entry.
