My wife and I have decided to stay in Collioure on the way to Arles. We're still deciding whether we'll be
going there in October, November or December. HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU SUGGEST THAT WE'LL NEED IN
COLLIOURE? 3 or 4 days. Thanks once again.
I've only been to Collouire on day trips, so a day seems about right to me. I'd suggest 2 nights in Collouire, then a couple of nights further up the coast - perhaps Pezenas in L'Herault - to break up the drive to Arles.
I'd say 3 nights, giving you 2 full days; love the town, and the area, and hope you'll make sure your there for the Sunday market which is super-especially the Paella served from huge pans. It's a really charming village, and take the time to walk the Impressionist tour showing where and who painted what. Missed going back there this last September while in Barcelona as ran out of time.
The area around Collioure is one of my favorite parts of France. You haven't said what interests you, but there are many towns and villages with beautiful Romanesque churches. Nearby Ceret has a good museum of modern art. (Picasso and some of his pals hung out there for a while.). A little to the west are Cathar castles, more medieval villages, and some spectacular mountain scenery.. Perpignan and Narbonne both merit visits.
In my opinion, 3 full days (4 nights) are not too much.
We've been to Collioure 8 times, each time staying longer than the last ... last year we stayed there for 12 days. But we go in May. We only travel on foot, or by train or bus. We walk to the next town Port Vendres for lunch sometimes, and to go to the larger market there. (The market in Collioure is two days per week - at least in May - Wednesday and Sunday, but it's a lovely market - has a beautiful setting right in the old town center.) But we take lots of side trips from Collioure:
Go to Elne, see the Terrus Museum, and have lunch at the wonderful Au RempArts restaurant (best tiramisu in France). Also the market in Elne is large (I got some fabulous prunes there!) Also, after lunch in Elne, don't miss the Maternite Museum: a mile or so out of town, but very moving.
Go to Banyuls-sur-mer and visit the home - now museum - of the French sculptor Aristide Maillol, and then have lunch at the lovely La Vielle Cave, hidden away on a pedestrian-only street.
If you go to Ceret, I agree, the Modern Art Museum is the place to see. Beautiful very tall trees all around in the center of town.
