We're planning a trip to Corsica next year and are torn on how much time to spend in Ajaccio (which R.Steves doesn't cover at all). It doesn't look like there's much to see/do there... Can someone who has been there advise us on this? Thanks.

It is OK to just use Ajaccio as an entry point to the island and head north towards the Calanche de Piana, inland, or south towards the beautiful coastline around Propriano. No need to stay in Ajaccio - I wouldn't. You absolutely definitely need a car in countryside anyway, so you can stay anywhere even in the countryside.
