How long does it take to get from Avignon Centre to Avignon TGV station?

I have half an hour to get off a bus at the gare routiere in Avignon and get to the TGV Avignon station to board a train for Paris. Is this enough time? (I understand there is a SNCF train connecting the two). Or am I better off waiting another 4 hours for the next TGV? (If I did, I'd wind up arriving at the Gare d'Lyon at rush hour)?

Book the train ticket to Paris as from Avignon Centre. There are some that connect to the Avignon TGV.
The bus station is next to Avignon Centre.

Hello Denny,

The train itself is about 6 minutes between Center and TGV but the real trick is they run every half hour so the timing of the train itself is probably the question. Right now they are running on :27 and :57 past the hour from Centre to TGV and that timing is probably consistent since all the locals seemed to know when the trains ran. This is weekdays and Saturdays - Sundays are often different on trains and buses.

The bus station is effectively under the Ibis hotel and a few minutes walk up to the train station, check the monitor, walk up to the platform and the six minutes on the train. Timewise it's doable but if you miss the train - or if the timing of the train doesn't work for you - you'll be stuck. I'm usually willing to cut things tighter than some people but the timing is tight enough that I wouldn't bet your TGV seat on it.

With the extra time you could take the time, walk into town and stash your bags and sight see Avignon and have a quick bite and then go onto the TGV station with plenty of time which isn't the worst 3 hours spent. Do not rush to the TGV station there is nothing there aside from the train and car rental places.

You can buy the Centre > TGV TER ticket before you go and it is good for any train that day in that direction and skip having to buy it at the station which will save you some time and hassle. Definitely do this if you're trying for a tight schedule but generally not a bad idea if you know you're taking that train on that day at some point.

Good luck,

Denny,

Tod has given you excellent information.

I’d definitely consider his suggestion to visit Avignon if your bus arrival doesn’t coincide with the train from Avignon Centre to the TGV station.

It’s always a good idea to have a plan B, C, or D, just in case plan A doesn’t work.

A few years ago there was a train strike happening when we were visiting France. The train to the TGV station was not running so SNCF provided a bus service for this route. However, the bus was very late and we literally had to run to catch the TGV train to Paris.
There were no taxis in sight when we needed one.

Have a wonderful trip!

Super super helpful, thank you Tod and Priscilla.

It would be way too risky to try to catch the TGV in half an hour from Avignon gare routiere - Centre.

I thought the trains ran every 5-10 minutes between the two gares (Centre/TGV), and it appears you can buy the tickets from the SNCF website.

I'll have already spent four days in Avignon when I return there to go back to Paris. It's good to know that there's no reason to get to the TGV station with a lot of time to spend.

I'm going to buy the TGV Avignon - Paris ticket right now, even though it's almost a four-hour wait, that leaves at 13:41.

Denny,
I presume there’s not an earlier bus?

Where would you be coming from on the bus? Are there other transportation options? Is there a train running that route?

Make sure you have a delicious gelato at
Amorino, or Royale Glace, when in Avignon!

Sorry Denny, but I think you're right.

Generically I think an hour is the minimum time to allow so if you just miss the connection train you can catch the next one in 30 minutes which will make the turn around at the TGV tighter than you may want but make-able without too much anxiety. There are only so many tracks at the TGV station so it's not like a big city station trying to find the platform.

You certainly will know Avignon and probably even have a favorite place to kill some time if you have to. Left luggage isn't at the station it's just in town here: https://pro.provenceguide.co.uk/533/new-la-consigne-luggage-lockers-in-avignon/ if you want it.

You can buy the tickets - I usually default to using Loco2.com but they are all the same train tickets in the end. One tip is that most stations now have LED displays on the train platforms that let you know where the train will actually stop on the platform so you can be in the right place. Some bigger stations will even tell you where your car - assuming you have a reserved seat - will stop so you can be right there.

Have a great trip,

It's about a five-kilometre drive, according to Google Maps, which the map estimates at 10-15 minutes. There is a taxi stand in front of the exit from the old Central station.

Thanks Priscilla, Tod..

I'll be coming from Uzes on the bus. There isn't a schedule yet for September.

Could you clarify/ascertain for me that there is an SNCF train that links the Avignon gare routiere to the Avignon TGV station? It actually seems to run every half hour. Somewhere I read that the two stations are linked by a train (bus?) every 10 minutes.

Anyway, I will have several hours to kill but I still don't want to miss that TGV to Gare de Lyon! Five kilometers is still a distance to walk with luggage. Hailing Uber seems dicey at a train/bus station/anywhere crowded, with all the people around.
