hello everyone,
staying in an apartment in paris & want do some grocery shopping mainly for breakfast items. we can figure out most items(yogurt, butter, etc) but curious about milk. we will be using it for coffee and cereal so looking for 2% or comparable. will it say nonfat, 1% or 2%?
Install this app on your mobile device point it to any item in the store and it will translate the writing on the packaging in real time, offline:
FWIW, I've got that app and have found that the operation is somewhat "erratic" at best. It may or may not work for you. Many language phrase books have some food information, or you might find it helpful to read these websites.....
From the Monoprix website, whole milk is "Lait Entier"
label here
2% milk (or thereabouts) is "Lait Demi-Ecreme"
label here
"Sterilise" is, of course, Pasteurized. Interesting that they do not call it after the French discoverer of the process.
Definitely, go for the 'lait cru' while you are there!
Delicious freshness that the USDA has all but erased from our collective memories.
Like the difference between fresh-squeezed and frozen-concentrate OJ.
In case you want to try Lait cru (raw milk), it should be boiled prior to consumption.
Hi Cathy
You will find three kinds of milk in grocery stores. There is a color code :
-red caps are for lait entier, whole milk
-blue caps are for lait demi-écrémé, semi-skimmed
-green caps are for lait écrémé, skimmed milk
Raw milk is hard to find, the bottles have yellow caps but I doubt you will find it in supermakets.
Anyway it always should be boiled before use, as Roberto said.

Raw milk sales are handled by each individual state, the USDA has no role in it.
Last time I checked Raw Milk is legal in California......serious crime in NY.
Ha! This made me giggle because I am currently living in Beijing where local milk has had scares, so at home I drink Lactel, a brand I drank while living in France made from cows in France. Carrefour's over here... and it's nice to see some of the items from France here.
Thank you everyone, this puts my mind at ease when getting our morning milk instead of standing in the dairy isle confused of which one to choose!
A related question. I am lactose intolerant and use non-dairy creamer with my breakfast cereal. Is there a similar product that I can buy instead of milk while in Paris?
