How far ahead to book an apartment?

Planning to travel in October 2023.
Should I book an apartment - a year in advance?
Many thanks!

Based on how the world has changed in the last 21 months, I'd not book anything 21 months out right now!

Way too early, Covid or no Covid. Is this in Paris or elsewhere? Big holiday or festival period? Very specific needs re space, location, etc.? I'd say six months ahead is ample time for most places, but others here have more experience than I do.

That depends upon where you are booking.

For summer, apartments located near beach areas are booked a year or more in advance. If you are looking at apartments in Paris where there is an increasing effort to crack down on illegal apartment rentals, the apartment you book now could be forced off the market by city inspectors within months.

COVID or No COVID - I think the question you are really asking is - What is the sweet spot for reasonable rental availability and reasonable rental price? That depends on where you are going. BUT, you have 18 months to think about it - so identify an area (s) you want now and check back on availabilities and prices monthly on rental websites. That will give you some data on what things go fastest, and how the price structures can change over time.
