We are planning to take the train from Marseilles to Nice before joining another group around the beginning of July. After a day or two in Nice, we will be returning to Marseilles to meet our group. We must be in Marseilles by noon. There is a 6:50 AM train which will get us there in plenty of time. How early should we buy tickets to make sure we can make that train? Would there be any reason to return the day before? (Our plans are flexible except for that morning.)
Thanks!
Most of the trains between Marseilles and Nice are TER trains, which means you can buy the tickets day of departure for the same price as way in advance. I don't believe they take reservations, and they run at the same speed as TGV because the speed limit is the track condition. The specific train you ask about departing Nice at 6:50 is a TER and originates there, so just be at the station 15 to 20 minutes before hand and you can board and pick your seats as soon as the train is spotted on the platform.
TER trains do not offer reservations, who ever gets to an empty seat, occupies it. It's also very possible that the coach you board can be jam packed, all seats taken.
But, the trains of interest originate and terminate at Marseilles St Charles and Nice. So like I say, get there early and you are the first to board and get a choice of seats.
