Can someone suggest a moderate hotel in Avignon, in the city center? We will be arriving by train, mid October, and could take a cab from the station.
Also, in Nice. Recommendations? I have not stayed in Nice for many years. Arriving by train mid October.

What's your maximum nightly rate in euros?
Maximum is around 100-125 euros per night.
In Avignon, we were very happy with the Hotel Le Colbert in 2014. The latest reviews on Trip Advisor are consistent with our experience. Perfect location.
In Nice, you'll find it most convenient to stay either in the Old Town, the Carre d'Or or the few blocks around Place Massena. Some hotels people like in that price range include the Hotel Windsor, the GoldStar suites, the Jay, Mercure Marche aux Fleurs or Promenade.
You can take a taxi or Uber from the station, but there is also a tram stop nearby and some of the hotels above are about 1km or less away.
The Grand Hotel Avignon is quite nice and right next to the Avignon Central train station (not the TGV station). Don't be too fooled by the name - its not a fancy old hotel by any means - more like a nice Holiday Inn, but the rooms were quite nice and the staff was wonderful.
