Hotels in the Dordgorne

We are 2 couples who will be in the Dordogne area for 3 nights in mid-September and had intended to make Sarlat our home base. We are finding that most hotels recommended in Rick's book and on Trip Advisor are already booked. Since we will have a car we are looking for another area from which to base our travels. Does anyone have any hotel or B&B recommendations that they feel would make a good central home base from which to explore the region? Merci!

We really liked Le Petit Versailles, a bed-and-breakfast in Beynac, on the river just east of Sarlat. It overlooks the valley and you can see several castles (not including Beynac which is uphill behind the place). Excellent breakfasts, friendly hosts, a short walk into "downtown" Beynac where there are several good restaurants. We liked Sarlat but were glad we didn't stay there as it took awhile to get in and out of town in the heavy traffic.

Some of Rick's listings mention the number of rooms at a property, so you can attack it from the angle of trying those that have more rooms to start with. If doing research with a room-finding web site like hotels.com, proprietors appreciate it if you cut out the middle-man and go direct to the hotel site or email for you actual booking.

We stayed at a B&B a few miles from Sarlat--Les Granges Hautes--very charming and has a pool and gardens. We stayed five nights and found it to be a perfect base for exploring the area. Google for more information if you are interested and I apologize for any incorrect spelling.

I go along with Dick about the Petit Versailles. It's a bit tricky to find but very much worth the effort. The room, view, breakfast and hosts were all just great. Since it is in Rick's book it also may be booked but take a shot at it pronto. Also in the Beynac area it is well worth the time to see the Chateau des Milandes which is not in Rick's book. Once owned by Josephine Baker, it has an interesting history and has been magnificently restored.

We liked Hotel Roseraie in Montignac and a bonus they have a wonderful restaurant with gorgeous elegantly presented meals. It is an easy drive to places like Les Eyzies and the Dordogne canoeing areas from there.

Another vote for Petite Versailles.
