Hotels in Paris this April?

Hi! We are traveling to Paris this April and are looking for hotel suggestions. This is our first time in Paris and plan is to stay five nights and have heard great things about the St. Germaine-des-Pres area. Of course we are open to suggestions and other areas of the city....... and we are tearing apart the RS 2015 Paris Book! We would just like to hear of some of your experiences and suggestions! Thanks!

We often stay at the Hotel du Pantheon, facing the Pantheon, and just up the street from Luxembourg Gardens. It's a small hotel that has recently been renovated on the theme of famous French women! It's quite quirky and unique but very comfortable with good service. It's officially in the Latin Quarter but close to the area you mentioned - easy walk to the metro, the river, and everything in the center.

Hi you haven't stated your budget.. so some suggestions may be too expensive. .others more budget then you are interested in.
I like the area.. its central to many sites..

I personally have never stayed in a RS recommended hotel.. but have stayed in about 15 different hotels in Paris.. I simply find a price I like, for the time I need.. My requirements are clean, good area and convenient location, and air conditioning( since I usually visit in summer) . I also try and get rooms with mini fridges so I can stock them with cold drinks and snacks.
I have stayed in about 5 or 6 areas..
For first timers and short visits I still think that while somewhat touristy.. the 4th, 5th and 6th are very good choices.

So.. give us a budget range in euros and I am sure I can suggest a few places and others will chime in too.

As Pat said, so that we can give you ,more useful information, please give us a hint about the cost range you would consider.
Just for your info, 150 to 200 euros is Rick's opinion of what a moderately priced hotel room in Paris costs that time of the year (April).

So let us know what cost range you will consider.

You're going in April so you shouldn't need AC. (I know, even a Motel 6 in the US has AC, not so in Europe, you have to clarify this if you're going in the summer, but probably not a consideration in Paris in April).

Hi! I was thinking I should have added that! I was thinking somewhere in the 175 - 240 euro range, so three to four star? I know it's a wide range, but since it is our first time, and maybe only time in Paris, I want to ensure a good stay! Our requirements are obviously clean and comfortable, a good staff that is helpful to first time visitors like us, and the mini fridge is a good idea as well. Not sure if any of the hotels include a breakfast of some type, but that too would be a plus! Thanks again!

Ok.. well don't count on a four star with that budget.. but really a three star is nice enough unless one really expects a large room and tons of amenities.

I have stayed in the deluxe room at the Hotel St Regent.. on rue Dauphine.. Loved the area.. and the rooms was nice ( not luxury) and had a good sized bright bathroom, super nice staff, etc. The standard rooms looked tiny ( peeped in doorway while a maid was cleaning one) so do get the Deluxe

I have also stayed in the Hotel Brighton , it is now a 4 star. but was a 3 star when I stayed there.. and if you wish to splurge the Tuilleries View rooms were very nice.. but it is not in the 6th( St Germain ) in the more sterile 1st( across from Louvre ).. our balcony even had view of Eiffel Tower in distance lighting up at night..

I can recommend you look at the Hotel Des Grand Hommes.. overlooks the Pantheon.. nice area.. not in the 6th but just near border in the 5th (Latin Quarter) but in less busy area.. close to Luxembourg Gardens.. easy walk to busy touristy areas and river however..

I have also stayed at Hotel Diana.. think its only a 2 star but loved area and room was nice.

Lastly, I have not stayed here but see it recommended a lot .. Grand Hotel des Balcons and it looks great and is in great area also .

You should take note of the star system in Paris. Stars are assigned by the government according to what services are available; for instance, an on-site restaurant adds a star to the count. They are not a rating of quality.

Yes, in Paris stars don't indicate price or quality (although there is at least a rough correlation).connection between these.
Some 3 star hotels are basically a 2 star with a lobby thrown in. Because it has the lobby or a fitness room, it gets a 3rd star.
I'm not saying disregard the star system in France, just know what it's based on.
Rick explains this in his book.

Left Bank is a good choice, lots to see. Just be aware that most of the traditional tourist sites are across the river.

Luxembourg Gardens area is very pleasant and has lots of hotels. There is also a stop for the RER line that runs out to the airport. Try Rue Monsieur-le-Prince, which is also near two famous restaurants Polidor and the other one that starts with P (sorry blocking on that).

Sights on left bank:

Orsay Museum
Eiffel Tower
Rodin Museum
Cluny Museum
The Pantheon
Luxembourg Gardens

Sights on the islands or close to the river on the Right Bank

Louvre Museum
Notre Dame
St Chapelle
Towers and Crypts of Notre Dame
Concierge.

Staying left bank doesn't put you out of the tourist side at all... there are sights all over Paris of course.. and of course there are some very right bank sights.. but staying close to the river on EITHER side put you close to most sites ( notable exception is of course Sacre Coeur, Moulin Rouge and Montmartre which are very much on right bank. )

While we have stayed in St Germaine de Pres, we did not love it. We have stayed at Hotel Madeleine Plaza twice and LOVE it. The price in April seems to be comfortable for you. It is a 1 minute walk to the Madeleine Metro stop. They do have A/C, nice and quiet. They offer breakfast but we did not do that preferring to walk 1 minute to the close by Fauchon where we sat outside and ate fabulous croissants and drank delicious coffee every morning. It is a very short walk to the Opéra Garnier which is so worth visiting. It is perhaps 20 minutes on foot to the Louvre and about the same to the d'Orsay. Also too, a walk along the Rue Saint Honore is just fabulous. It was immaculate, people were great. Can you tell we love it?

My personnel favorite is the 7th, but all neighborhoods have their own flavor and pluses.

Hotel Beaugency (recommended by RS) is very nice, AC, conveniently located at Rue Cler, breakfast available, English speaking staff 24/7, and possible for 120 euros if staying more than 3 nights. I stayed there in 2011 and will be back this summer. Rooms are small, but that is what you get for a European boutique hotel. It was big enough for me. Room and bathroom clean and well kept.

Hotel Londre Eiffel is also really nice, two blocks from ET, 200+ euros a night. Room slightly bigger than Beaugency. Also has AC, breakfast, English speaking staff. I stayed there in 2013. Again clean and well kept.

I forgot to add that Beaugency and Hotel Londre Eiffel both had fridges in the room.

Hi,
By now you probably know what you are going to do. Better than a hotel is an apartment rental. Check out airbnb, and VRBO. You get a whole apartment fro less than a hotel room. True there is no check in desk. But you get a full kitchen and washing machine.
Some of these rentals are spectacular. Great locations and really neat apartments.

We always stay in Henri IV Rive Gauche in the Latin Quarter near the Seine when we have a few nights needing a hotel in Paris. Very nice rooms, nice view onto an old church out the window, pleasantly appointed.

I think you will be happy with choice... but do come back and let us know.. I have stayed in many hotels in Paris.. ( at least 13-15) so I am used to Parisian hotels( rooms are smaller.. even the "big" rooms are not what we would consider spacious.. but once you have been in a hotel where you can't close the toilet door without hitting your knees your idea of spacious changes,, and yes.. we have stayed in such a place.. don't worry , the hotels I have suggested are not THAT small.. lol ) .. but I thought the Regent was well located ( there is an ATM right beside hotel,, so I could take out bunch of money.. and take it right back to room safe easily) and there are cafes and shops all around you.. walk to many sites from that area too. I know when I stayed there I had brought a friend who had never been to Europe.. and her comment on walking around area just outside hotel was " this is exactly what I pictured when I thought of Paris" which I thought was cute.. since Paris has many different types of areas( for instance on right bank there are areas with wide streets and boulevards, as opposed to the more narrow older areas in some parts of the left bank) but we all have a romantic image of what our Paris will look like, there is no right or wrong however.

I think you'll love the area! We stayed in an apartment literally 1 minute from the hotel, and found the area very convenient to museums and gardens and the neighborhood is quintessentially Parisian! Have a wonderful time!

Been to Paris once before and are going again as a family in April. My parents just went last September. We all have stayed at Hotel de L'Esperance in District 5, recommended by Rick Steves, and have been happy. We will be staying there when we go in April as well since it was the most affordable place I could find, inside the city limits, for my family of 4 (we had to book two separate rooms, though -- but that was still more affordable than any "quads" that I could find). It is only a 2 star hotel, but is exactly as described by RS "simply a terrific... value. ...quiet and cushy, with soft rooms, canopy beds, and a welcoming lobby..." It is extremely affordable for Paris, which was a great thing for us. Unfortunately, breakfast is extra (E9) but there is a wonderful bakery with delicious chocolate croissants just a block away. It is a clean hotel which is an absolute must for me that is located a hop-skip-and-jump from a Metro station. Really can't beat the value! I don't believe there is a fridge in the room, but you can always check. It is a small room but if you're in Paris, chances are you aren't going to be in the hotel room much anyway, so who really cares if it's small (it's not ridiculously small, though -- just typical).
