Any suggestions on hotels in the Latin Quarter that would be close to the river.
We absolutely loved Hotel des Grandes Ecoles in Rue du Cardinal Lemoine. Would stay there again any time. It is about a 10-min walk to the river, also convenient to Metro and to the Pantheon. It fills up way in advance and there's a time limit for how far head you can book. https://www.hotel-grandes-ecoles.com/index-en.html
One drawback which some have pointed out is that it doesn't have air conditioning (or at least it didn't a couple of years ago when we were there), so if you are on an upper floor in hot weather it can be uncomfortable.
The RS guide used to list Latin Quarter hotels, which is how we found out about it. The next year RS reduced Paris coverage to just a few neighborhoods, Latin Quarter not being one of them. Better for those in the know, I guess!
We will again be staying at the Hotel Home Latin (hotelhomelatinparis.com) in Sept. It is a typical small European hotel on a relatively quiet side street and a leisurely 10 minute walk will put you on the river across from Notre Dame. The same walking time in other directions will get you to the Parthenon or the Luxembourg Gardens etc. We find the rooms are typically small, well furnished and very clean. There are numerous other similar hotels in the area, you can look at some of the booking web sites to find them. The problem with getting too close to the river is that the traffic and attendant issues have gotten really bad over the years. Also if you need it, there is a laundromat a block away.
You didn't provide a price range or time of year. For a very budget friendly hotel with Paris charm and a/c you could look at Hotel Familia. Slightly more upscale is its "sister" property next door is Minerve. It is about a 5 minute walk from the river. I love the location.
Hotel Diana is budget, has nice rooms and a good location.
We’ve stayed at Hotel St Jacques on rue des Ecoles twice, liked it very much, very close to the river and Notre Dame. It’s also the hotel where they filmed “Charade” with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant (great movie).
We’ve also stayed at Hotel du Pantheon which is very nice.
I stayed at Hotel des Grandes Ecoles for a month, don’t like the location. Too far from the river and Notre Dame for me.
The worst night of my life in Paris was at the Hotel Grande Ecoles in June when our upper floor room registered at almost 100F in the afternoon and didn't cool down to be comfortable at night due to no cross draft. We had stayed there in May years before and liked it for its lovely garden. In summer, it is unbearable IMHO but if you do go with it, make sure you have a ground floor room in summer.
Our go to is Henri IV Rive Gauche -- near the river and has AC and nicely appointed though small rooms -- many rooms have lovely view on old church.
The outdoor area at Hotel des Grandes Ecoles used to be nice enough, now it’s an over-grown mess imo.
We liked this hotel years ago but will not stay there again. The rooms in the building across from reception area had a lot of charm and nice views of the garden. Any request for room location/ preference is ignored. Last stay we were put in a horrid room in the building adjacent to reception. The room was a triple (for two of us and room rate is higher for this horrid room) on top floor with a spiral staircase--no elevator in this section. Room had a view of the trash cans below.
Hi, I’m currently staying at the Hotel College du France in the Latin Quarter. It’s a couple of blocks from Blv Saint Germain de Près, and maybe 15min from (poor) Notre Dame, Saint Chapelle, Shakespeare and Company etc. There’s no ac that I’m aware of, but there is a lift to the 5th floor. It is quite small however - as in a cant stretch my arms out when inside it. 😆 Not having been to Paris before, I can’t speak to the size of the room - for just myself it’s pretty good, but the BR is a bit tight so I just leave the door open. The staff have all been very helpful and speak English well, although I’m trying to practice my French which has generally resulted in encouraging smiles!
Hope that helps in your search
We had a lovely stay last September at Hotel Residence Henri IV. It was an easy six block walk to the bridge behind Notre Dame. We had a suite on the top floor with a balcony and the room had AC.
Note that Hotel Residence Henri IV and Henri IV Rive Gauche are different hotels -- both apparently good choice, but different hotels.
The garden at Grand Ecoles was not so much lovely as rare -- there are few hotels where you could sit outside or even bring in lunch and enjoy it at an outside table -- I am not surprised it is neglected though as the last time we stayed there the place was very run down. Our room had ugly stains on the rug and was well worn as well as 100F in the afternoon and very hot at night.
Wow, I am sorry to hear that Hotel des Grandes Ecoles is no longer as nicely kept up as we found it to be a few years ago. I guess I should stop recommending it so highly.
Four years ago, our family of five stayed at the Hotel Excelsior Latin. We had a pleasant and blessedly air-conditioned stay there. One perk that came in handy for me was an ice machine in the lobby along with a self serve coffee machine for guests. We were there in a big heat wave and I was struggling. Putting ice in my thermos each day with water made a big difference for me. The location was great - close walks to the river, to the Luxembourg Gardens, Pantheon, and more. Our teens/young adults enjoyed wandering around the Latin Quarter and seeing all the interesting shops.

Look at the Hotel du Lys.
I have stayed twice at Hotel Royal Saint Michel on Blvd St Michel just across from the fountain and the metro/RER Notre Dame Saint Michel stop which is on the river You are steps away from the river. I highly recommend it! A/C, comfortable beds, clean rooms, lovely breakfast, great neighborhood.
Hotel d'Aubusson in the 7th. Two blocks to the river. Wonderful central left bank hotel, 5* feel and perfect service. Not a Rick Steves' margin but worth every cent. Look at the packages. If you book it right the room price is cheaper with the package than without. Have stayed there numerous times. highly recommend! here is the link: http://www.hoteldaubusson.com/en/
I think Irv means the Pantheon, not the Parthenon. Easy to misspell or the auto correct strikes again. The Pantheon is one of our regular stops with many names you might recognize -- Curie, Louis Braille, and his name is in Braille, Voltaire, Victor Hugo. Worth a long visit if you have time.
