Hotels in Marais Neighborhood

I like this area - I'll be solo for 5 nights mid-May - I have a RS Paris 2014 guidebook I'm going by at the moment. I'm leaning Hotel Pratic - at about $120/night. Place des Vosges and St Louis Maraas are about $180 (worth it?) I don't care too much about a breakfast - don't mind a smallish room as I'll be single. Any other recs?

Thanks.

I guess this post should be n the hotel reviews board. I think these boards need named differently - this board is "help planning your trip", the other board is "hotel reviews"...but what if you need help planning to stay in a hotel?

You're in the right spot! The "Reviews" section is for people who have already stayed in a hotel and write a review when they get home. I agree it can be confusing...

Anyway, I haven't stayed there, but I love the location of Hotel Pratic - it's right across from Place Sainte-Catherine which is a very charming area. Plus, you're very close to the Saint-Paul metro which is nice.

Enjoy your trip!

I can't help you but you're on the right board for those who can. The "reviews" boards are for people to post reviews of places they've stayed or eaten. You might look there for reviews of Marais hotels, try the search feature above for the Pratic -- but likely you'll get more ideas on this thread. I assume you've checked out Pratic on Trip Advisor?

So I'll shut up and let others with knowledge get on with it. Have a good stay.

OK, thanks - I do see some people do ask for hotel recs on the reviews board too.

I did see the Hotel Pratic got some bad reviews due to construction taking place in the hotel, but it seems it may have ended last fall, so might be good now.

All construction has ended at Hotel Pratic, but it fronts on the very noisy Place du Marche Sainte-Catherine - especially problematic on weekends and holidays.

You might look at Hotel Castex, which is in a much quieter area, just a couple of blocks away. Single room around 110 EU.

The main thing that the Hotel Pratic offers is a fantastic meaning central though very noisy location. That $120ish room is going to be less than 90 square feet. If that amount of space works for you, go for it. If you have the right attitude meaning that you want a very central location in a relatively pricey section of town and are expecting a 2 star hotel in terms of amenities, this is a good choice. Let's just say that housekeeping is not this hotel's strong suit but you can't have everything.

Have you looked at Hotel Jeanne d'Arc?

I was there solo in September and October 2016. The first time, I stayed at Jules Ferry Hostel. It's not horrible but not particularly wonderful either. The second time I stayed at the MIJE hostel. I really liked it, great building and perfect location. If you aren't averse to hostels, I'd suggest considering the MIJE.

We've stayed twice at the Hotel Turenne le Marais. It's very near to Hotel Pratic. It's very clean. The staff are professional and most speak English. Two of our group stayed in singles. Small rooms, but fine. No need to contort yourself to get to the shower. The singles room rate would be about same as Pratic.

I really like the area. It's great for first timers. A mix of busy and quiet areas. Plenty of places to eat, in all price ranges.

Seconding Hotel Jeanne d'Arc. Well-run, in your price range, and right around the corner from Place du Marche de Ste. Catherine. Also, very near Place des Vosges. Great location.

Same location, same noise issues. I'd look on a different street, if you care about sleeping.

Chexbres, have you actually stayed at the hotel Jeanne d'Arc? As you live in Paris it makes me ask the question. I have stayed at the said hotel and have no recollection of street noise. When did you stay there? My stay was quite a long time ago. Have things changed? Considering all the posts over the years recommending the Jeanne d'Arc without any mention of noise, I am wondering if the noise is a recent problem.

I just moved away from the vicinity of Marche Sainte-Catherine, because of the noise problems on the weekends.

Neighbors are up in arms about it, and the Mayor is trying to do something about it, but all efforts have failed, so far.
Noise is increasing in little squares like this, due to performers playing "music" and dancing for the tourists on weekends.
Tourists think it's great to have this kind of entertainment, but it's a crying shame for the people who actually reside in apartments and who might have kids who need to get some sleep, or get some themselves.
There are also lots of drunks out late at night in this little place.

I have stayed at Jeanne d'Arc probably 20 years ago, long before it was remodeled.
Friends have stayed there and at Hotel Pratic, and Hotel Caron, and even with double-glazed windows, they weren't happy with the noise.

There is a very noisy Scottish bar nearby, which attracts huge crowds, too.

Place des Voges Hotel is not worth it--the rooms are ridiculously small. I prefer the Castex--especially with the Rick Steves discount that gives you a free breakfast.
