I will be spending three days in Barcelona before taking a Mediterranean cruise. Wondering what is the best area to stay in and if anyone could recommend a good hotel?

You will find many pre/post cruisers at Hotel Continental Barcelona
It is right on Rambla, has a free 24 hr buffet with beer & wine, it is clean, the staff friendly & helpful...oh...and pink!
