My sister and I are visiting Normandy area prior to Paris trip. Looking for suggestions for hotels (for 2 adults) and D Day tours while in the Normandy area near the Tapestry (Bayeau) area. Main focus is the American cemeteries' and the Beaches were America soldiers landed. Hope to see the Taps presentation at the cemetery as well.
I can highly recommend Overlord Tours.
I can also recommend Hotel Reine Mathilde
Many Thanks!
cynpiotter,
There are lots of options for tours and hotels in the area. Bayeux is a popular base for visiting many of the sights. The tapestry is being removed after Aug. 31 for a two-year restoration. To check on the sights to see relative to the American part in the liberation, such as the cemetery, go to abmc.gov (American Battlefield Monuments Commission).
This topic is often fully discussed here on the forum. Try entering in the search bar above something like "DDay beaches/Normandy", then filter for "forum", then filter for "6 months or newer" or "one year or newer".
If you haven't checked any guidebooks yet, I suggest you either buy one or get one at the library for France, and read what they say about Normandy. That can give you an overview. As for lodging, you can get a general idea at booking.com. Put in your dates and filters/requirements to see what's out there. You can always try to contact the hotel on its own to arrange a stay as well. Also, find the tourist authority for where you want to go and try their website for info. Most have an English language option (a Union Jack somewhere in a corner). The month or time of year you will be there will impact responses here. Rick Steves' book on France will have some specific tour and lodging suggestions. So will this forum when you do a search here.
Responders on the forum will want to know how long you have, when you will be there, will you have a car, what is your budget per night for lodging (in general).
We love to help, but if you are more specific and have done some searching ahead of time, we can be more helpful.
We intend to travel by train to Bayeau from CDG late august. spend two days in Bayeau then back to Paris for Paris Tour.
Thank you
All great advice. Suggest you not count the arrival day in Bayeau. Spend two full days there then leave on day four for Paris. We took the train from Paris and there were cabs waiting at the station . We took HQCompany tours for a full day to the beaches. We opted for a full day private tour and it was expensive but one of the best things we have ever done. Stayed at Villa Aggarthi a block and a half from the tapestry and a short stroll to town..My son and his wife did almost the exact trip this April and were also very happy with everything.I don't know if there are any tours where you will be able to see the flag lowering ceremony as tours usually have ended by then.
Based on a recommendation from this site we booked HQCompany.

We had a full day private tour for our group of 5.
It was one of the highlights of our trip.
Bayeux is an absolutely charming town and the pick up location for organized DDay tours. You don't say when you are visiting, but the Tapestry goes off view Sept 1 for a couple of years.
We used Overlord for our tour.
You may also want to look at Le Petit Matin B&B for accommodations.
Enjoy!
Lucky you! You will be in Bayeux before the tapestry goes away for two years. Do try to see it, even if you have to wait in line. I have seen it three times now and am always duly impressed (history major here). Also, if time allows, see the cathedral and the museum in town about the Battle of Normandy. Do check the abmc.gov site to verify when the flag lowering ceremony will be. It is quite moving. Perhaps your tour choice will cover that. It's worth checking out. We always drive ourselves, so we had no problem. Since you have two full days (?), you can do a full day tour on day two, and see the tapestry, cathedral and museum the first day, and maybe arrange a ride out to the American cemetery for the flag ceremony. If you are counting arrival day there as one day, plan on the tour itself for the second day. See the Bayeux sites on the first day. How many nights are you there? If coming early on one day and leaving late the next day, be sure to take that more limited time into consideration. (Train arrival and departure times.)
Best of luck!
