hello. we are seeking a hotel very close to gare st lazare for two nights before taking the train from there to bayeux. are there recommendations for a hotel nearby that is reasonably priced? I spotted the Hilton Opera but its tres expensive!
Also if you have stayed right around the train station recommendations of bistros, restaurants, shops etc. Any other thoughts you have will be greatly appreciated. thank you
Dan
I stayed at the Best Western Plus Hotel Sydney Opera last fall, 2024. Walked with roller bag to Gare St Lazarre.
I was there for multiple nights and found it quite comfortable with very fine service. Best Western properties in Europe are not the same as in the US - much more individual character.
Gare St Lazare is quite close to one of my favourite streets in Paris, Rue des Martyrs. Lots of food shops, fromageries, boulangeries there that are first rate.
https://www.lebongeorges.paris/ Is an excellent restaurant close by.
Another plus of the Hotel Sydney Opera when arriving in Paris from CDG - walkable from the Roissey bus stop. This would lose its advantage when traveling in larger groups, but as a solo traveler I easily caught the RoisseyBus on arrival at CDG saving on taxi fare. The Roissey bus takes contactless credit cards these days - very easy.
Hotel Bedford is within walking distance.

We've stayed here twice and plan to stay again in July since they have very large connecting rooms.
We spend a lot of time at the Le Paris London. :)

Great Saint-Germain Spritz and people watching.
I often stay in that area before or after taking a train to Normandy. I have stayed at both the Astotels on Rue de Caumartin, and Hôtel Le Relais Madeleine on Rue Godot de Maurey. I remember both as being fine, and a quick walk to the train station. Not too fancy, but very convenient. Between them I usually got based on price. Lots of bistros near the former, and the whole area is fine for walking around and finding place to eat and drink. The area around the Madeleine church has plenty of shopping and there are some covered passages nearby too. Plus a quick walk to the Palais Garnier, and the shopping malls on Blvd. Haussmann. Another advantage of that area is going to/from CDG you can use the RoissyBus. Quick, cheap and convenient and avoids tunneling underground in the piss-soaked Metro.
