Hotel Rooms for Four People in Southern France? Are They Rare?

We are hoping to visit southern France and Barcelona in July. There are four of us (a family with two young teenagers).

Note: At the moment, we are planning to rent a car. Therefore our accommodations must offer, or be within reach of secure parking.

-Is it rare to find hotel rooms that accomodate four people comfortably? I have seen some rooms with sleeper sofas, are these the type with very thin mattresses and a metal bar across the center that can make sleeping very uncomfortable?

-Should we consider apartment rentals instead of hotel rooms?

-Do we have time to reserve either hotels or apartment rentals?

Thank you very much!

Hotel rooms for four are very rare. To have secure parking another hurdle. Yes, you should consider apartments rentals. But, you are booking at high season and this is June so you’ll get what you can and it will not be what you want. Best of luck but these sorts of trips need to be booked out many months in advance for a family your size.

In this short a window of time, and for that specific a need, I think I'd go directly to Booking.com and see what comes up. No general answer to these questions that will help you know what to do.

Having seen your 2 posts, I suggest you look 1st for lodging in the locations you plan to go. No point buying plane tickets until you have that set, at this late date.

The problem with four people in a French hotel room is that it means a single bathroom. With two teenagers I would doubt you will be able to hit the street until much later than you would like. You should consider two rooms, particularly at this late date. I usually have my accomodations booked months in advance. Most of the good ones are probably full by now.

As suggested above try Booking.com and filter for four person rooms and/or two bathrooms. You may get lucky.

If you are planning to pick up and drop off the car in different countries, check on the international drop charge. It can be very, very high.

By “secure parking”, do you mean that you can leave luggage visible in the car? Or do you mean that no one can either sideswipe or break-in to to the car? It seems optimistic to me. Except for security agency employees, such parking is rare at home. Even in the US, hotel parking is not always free of charge, by the way. You also have to think about the size of car you need for four passengers and their luggage. I’ve found that European parking spaces are smaller than we’re used to at home, and aisles are narrower and curves sharper inside garages. You also have to be ready for a different car to be what’s available that day.

I am not trying to talk you out of a car. We rent a car for vacations where it seems appropriate. We found a car useful in southern France, but a car is not needed in Barcelona or other large cities.

You should definitely be looking for apartments. VRBO, AirBnb.

We found Barcelona apartments via Habitat apartments.

You should really look at two rooms, B&Bs/gites or apartment rentals -- look beyond AirBnb to Homeaway, Tripadvisor and Booking.com. These are the four major aggregators for holiday rentals and some have have multiple sites under their umbrella, including french-specific ones, but properties are increasingly not cross posted due to the expense and pressure on instant-booking exclusivity. It is late, but you may luck out with a property that is new to the market.
