We liked Hotel Alexandra. And friends who stayed at Hotel du Chateau really liked it. If you like Fondue or Raclette, Le Frieti is very good. On one trip we ate at Lilas Rose 4 times in the 3 days we were there, and loved it. But the next year we again went there and weren't so thrilled.
If you like ice cream, we thought Glacier des Alpes was the best in town (we did a taste test).

The Imperial Palace Hotel is at the head of the lake, has lovely views, and is worth the splurge. It was the only place we could find in Annecy that had secure on-site parking. We booked one of the lower-priced rooms with a side view of the gardens but received a free upgrade to a lovely balcony room. From the hotel one walks through a park/beach to reach the historic town center and the boat docks.

We also enjoyed the Imperial Palace. Here’s what I wrote from that location in my trip report in 2016:

Annecy – This location was our 3-day relaxation stop halfway through our Italy/France trip. Although I always book us in a hotel in the center of activity in each town, at this location I selected the Imperial Palace Hotel – located for optimum view of the lake, and a gorgeous, historical hotel. The beautiful old town of Annecy was just a short 10 minute walk along the promenade – enjoyed the leisurely walk and the hotel was nice & quiet at night. I booked the cheapest room, but the hotel upgraded us to a spacious, beautiful appointed side-view room with a terrace overlooking the lake. Each night, we anticipated the amazing croissants and pastries at Pan & Gatto – never had any in Lyon or Paris that compared! Since the forecast was rain for Day 2-3 at Annecy, we rented a small power boat for an hour the first day to enjoy the entire lake. (Luckily, Day 2-3 were just overcast.) We tried taking the bus to Menthon-St. Bernard two mornings, but it never showed up. Instead, enjoyed the nice bike road along the lake and hiked around the area. Summary: beautiful lake/mountain location with lots of outdoor activities and a photogenic quaint old town. Pleased with our hotel selection

[Re Hotel Alexandra] Decent, but rooms facing the street can be noisy if you need to keep the windows open.

Yes, I should have mentioned that. We didn't have such a room, but it was obvious from its situation that that could be a problem.

Scott,

We enjoyed our stay at the Ibis Hotel, on Rue de la Gare (not far from the train station) next to a river canal.
FYI: There are two Ibis Hotels in Annecy but this is the one closest to the city center.

We enjoyed the following places for delicious meals:

  • 'Ti Mad' - delicious crepes.
  • 'Sapaudia', - great pizzas.
  • 'Le Fretti' - if you're in the mood for Raclette and/or Fondue. We did not eat the Raclette, nor the fondue, but our neighbors did, and it looked amazingly delicious- but it was way too much food and we weren/t that hungry that evening. Reservations recommended for this place.

Make sure you eat the best gelato at 'Glacier des Alpes'

Hopefully there will be a street market when you visit. We got some great snacks and the sweetest fresh fruits : )

Have a wonderful trip!

I see that several people have recommended the Glacier des Alpes gelato. We tried them and actually liked the gelato shop better that was a block from there located on the canal. (And we eat a lot of gelato in Europe!) Which means that you should try gelato a couple of times each day, just to pick your favorite! ; ). I especially thought their caramel gelato was better.

We also enjoyed Hotel Alexandra. We stayed for 3 nights in mid-August and did not experience any street noise except for one short period when a rowdy bunch were passing the hotel. Our window was open all night . We were not on the main street but we looked right out onto that street. Don't know why we had a quieter experience than the other posters.

Robert, thanks for sharing your link! The pictures bring back nice memories. I recognize the photo of my favorite - Glacier Perrierre.

Also for eating, we looked forward to stopping at Pan & Gatto for delicious croissants and pastries each morning!

Enjoy your trip!
