My husband and I have never been to Lyon and will be there for 3- 4 days in June. We like walking to the sites, restaurants, and shops if possible. What neighborhoods are a good base for that and any hotel recommendations? It must have AC and be fairly quiet.
Thank you!
The Phenix has river views (if you request) and is walkable to everything, including the excellent metro and bus system,
and it has some of the old charm that other better-known spots in the historic district charge a lot more for.
(Note you should get a transit card or city pass even if you prefer walking -- the Lyon City Card is an excellent value)
We stayed at the Okko near Pont Lafayette.. I strongly recommend you read the reviews on tripadvisor.. mines there too!! Just google "tripadvisor reviews hotel Okko lyon ) and it pops up .
We loved the hotel, quiet location just over the river from the "old city ".. and when we arrived there was an amazing street market along the river bank.. I hope you are there for Market day.. my daughter couldn't stop snapping photos of all the lovely produce .
We stayed in August.. ( and btw theres a neat pool and water play area along the river bank to. .and those cute little restaurants etc) and the ac worked great. The shower was a nice big one.. beds were comfy.. only downside is we took a budget room that did not provide much in the say of clothes storage.. ( but we were fine for only 3 nights)
An added bonus was the free breakfast every morning.. mostly continental, but they had a warm entre usually like a quiche , warm breads, yougurts and cereals ,fruits, cheeses and cold meats, you could also pop an egg into an automatic egg cooker .
And in the evening.. they serve you one free glass of wine ( you can order more but you would pay for it) ,and put out an appetizer selection that literally was our light apetites dinner one night.. cold meats, cheeses, etc.. Very good.. and free1
And.. the lobby where the food is served serves as also the dining area.. and you have a key card that gives you access to this area 24 hours a day.. and in there they have two large fridges stocked with juices, soda, water, yogurts, some fruits and sometimes cheeses .. and you are welcome at any time to help yourself.. for free.. there is always bread available .. so you can literally go out all morning.. sightseeing and hot,, come back, grab a cold drink and a snack.. nap for an hour in after noon.. and they you can go out again all refreshed.
I considered this hotel an excellent find.. its not a deluxe hotel for those seeking luxury.. but its clean, modern décor, excellent staff, and all the added bonuses made this a 8/10 for me.. and the added treats of free food and drink.. well.. its a 9/10 after all. Only caveat is in the cheaper room you do not get a proper closet to hang clothes.. just some hooks etc.. but I think the more expensive rooms have more storage.
Ten minute walks and you are in heart of the bustling old town.. its a great location ( our room had a river view too!)
We were just in Lyon (Sep) and stayed in Elysee Hotel on rue President Edouard Herriot. About dead center in town. Herriot is one of the main streets in the area and easily walked everywhere.
