What area of the city is best to stay in for 3 nights to see the Paris sites that is economical?

It's not the area, it's the hotel that is the price you want. And what price is it that you want?

Look at the hotels Rick suggests in his guide and come back with further questions. Also look at Expedia, Booking.com, the usual suspects.

Best areas for tourists include Ile St. Louis and St Germain des Pres.

You might consider finding a hotel close to an RER station so you can take a quick train into the city center of Paris. You should save considerable coin doing so. Saint-Germain-en-Laye has an Ibis within a couple of blocks of the RER station there; you would take the A line to Chatelet-les-Halles station, which is in the heart of the Paris action.

I think for a first visit staying in the heart of Paris is ideal. That would be the 4th arrondissement (the Marais and Ile St Louis - the little island next to Notre Dame), the 5th arrondissement (Latin Quarter) and the 6th arrondissement (St Germain).

We use Booking.com to find good hotels within our budget.

That said, check out these two budget hotels: Hotel Diana and Hotel Jeanne d’Arc.

You’re going to get a lot of different opinions about this. Paris has plenty of enjoyable neighborhoods and things to do, so there are a lot of options. To focus your efforts, what Paris sights do you want to see? What do you consider economical? Do you want to walk places or are you comfortable using public transportation?

I’ve stayed in the 6th and 14th and enjoyed both. Before my most recent Paris vacay, I was kind of concerned about staying in the 14th because it was a little further from the proverbial center. However, while both arrondissements I stayed in have their charms, I think I might have enjoyed my stay the 14th more than the 6th. Lots of great restaurants and it was easy to get anywhere on the Metro.

My advice is to choose a spot near a metro stop and you can get anywhere easily.

What is your budget per night ? (Someone's idea of economical may be someone else's idea of moderate, or even expensive)

Depends on your definition of economical. But for the best area to stay, consider staying in the very center of Paris. Check our the Hotel des Deux-Iles. It is located as can be on Ile St. Louis. There are a couple of other hotels on the same street, and one of them is a sister hotel. Cross the river one way and you will be in the Marais -- cross it the other way and you'll be in The Latin Quarter. Walk to the end of the island, cross the bridge, and you'll be at the back of Notre Dame which is still being reconstructed. The Metro is nearby and getting anywhere is not a problem. There are several restaurants on the island. If you stay there, we can steer you to a great little place for breakfast as hotel breakfasts seem to be over priced for what one gets. We can also tell you about several places for lunch and / or dinner on the island as well.

Could you clarify your priority. Is it most central to see sights or is it economical? People have told you the most central. To find economical, try using Booking.com. You can request area, hotel ratings, and price range. Then you can recheck the prices directly on the hotels' websites to see which gives you a better price: the hotel directly or Booking.com.

We have enjoyed staying in the area near the Arc de Triomphe and near the CDG Etoile metro station which has many metro lines to take you anywhere in Paris.

I have stayed in the Luxembourg Garden neighborhood four times, the St.Germaine twice, near the Eiffel Tower/Rue Cler once, near the Sacre Coeur once, and one time near the Opera House. Of all of those, my favorites are the Luxembourg Garden & St. Germaine areas. For handy convenience, I would look at a Paris metro map. Look up the activities you want to see and then which metro stops are the most convenient lines to readh those. That will help you narrow it down to a few neighborhoods.

I stayed in the Nation when I first came to Paris. It was affordable living in the area. The metro station is 2 mins walk, it has a supermarket and also bakeries. It has also a park where I usually have a picnic.
