We are in the middle of a 3 night stay at end of May. Good location near ocean, kind and courteous staff, clean rooms for decent price. Unfortunately, on first full day, we placed “Do Not Disturb” sign on door, came back to room after 10pm, then noticed next morning that a burlap shopping bag with most of the souvenirs we bought in Paris and Avignon was gone. Hotel manager insisted our sign said “please service room”. Ok maybe (?). But why was bag gone? Did you leave it near the trash can? Ok, but it was a burlap shopping bag with souvenirs and receipts in it - why would they throw it away? You’ll have to file a claim with us after you get home and get your bank statement. This is wrong and unacceptable. Any one have any similar experience with Hotelles Cigales in Nice, France? It is a Rick Steves recommended hotel.
Oh no!! So sorry this happened to you, I would be devastated. Can you ask to look in the trash or speak with the employee who cleaned your room to see if they remember grabbing it by mistake? The hotel does not have that many rooms, I think each floor had 3-4 doors once you exited the elevator so you would think they would have an idea about it. It's not like the MGM in Vegas where one of the attendants may not remember because they clean hundreds of rooms a day.
We stayed at Hotel Les Cigales last Summer and had a very good experience there and would totally stay there again based on the close location to the train station and the beach. This hotel had the tiniest rooms of all the hotels we stayed at and we are super careful not to leave anything out, everything goes in the suitcase or at least on top. Our room had a wardrobe that we also placed things in.
The hotel manager said the trash had already been picked up, and the room service is contracted out. She contacted them. Waiting to hear what she found out.
Sorry for this incident and their attitude does sound unacceptable.
I would ask myself could anyone have mistaken the bag as a bag of trash if they were in a hurry and did not look through the bag?
If so, it really is a shame but not sure you have much recourse other than being upset and it does not sound like the manager is being helpful. Other than a bad hotel review post stay not sure what else I would do in that situation.
If absolutely not, and this was clearly theft I would put up a stink about it.
Tell the manager you are calling the police and will file a report of robbery from your room ; this will force the hotel to investigate and they will not want the police report filed at their hotel so may be all of sudden much more amenable to your demands of reimbursement or credit you a night stay, etc...
