My husband and I are planning a trip to Paris next summer for our 20th wedding anniversary. There are so many options in Paris, I'm a bit overwhelmed. We're willing to spend a bit more for the milestone, but we're not independently wealthy. We'd like to stay somewhere central as we think walking it a great way to get to know a city. Also, we like places that reflect the character of the city we're staying. Any recommendations would be very much appreciated.
Congratulations!! Love long and prosper. Don't ignore the possibility of staying on Ile St Louis. It is as centrally located as one can get, and with the Metro one can go anywhere with no trouble at all. Depending on the time of year and vacancies the prices can be competitive with other areas. Check out Hotel des Deux-Iles and Hotel de Lutece (they have the same owners) and see what you think. You can also check out Hotel Saint-Louis that is one the same street. Nothing like staying right in the heart of Paris on your aniversary.
The Acadamie Hotel in the 7th might be an option.
Hotel Minerve and Familia Hotel, next door to each other on Rue des Ecoles in the 5th, are both beautiful properties. I've stayed at both of them in the past. For my upcoming trip, which I am doing alone, I opted for a place that was less expensive for a single room, but they are both good values for a couple.
Happy Anniversary!
Hotel des Grandes Ecoles is beautiful, quiet, and moderately priced. It is on Rue Cardinal Lemoine in the Latin Quarter, easy walking to a variety of small restaurants. I think it's about 2 blocks to the nearest Metro, and about 15 min walk from Notre Dame Cathedral. It seems to be popular with people from England and with "mature" adults (i.e., it's not a trendy hot spot for the 20-somethings).
We learned of it in the RS guide 2014, before RS decided to focus just on a very few Paris neighborhoods.
Their booking setup is a bit tricky as you have to wait until 4 months before your desired check-in date.

We just returned from a stay at a Cobblestone Paris apartment in the Marais. It was a great location right on Place St. Catherine, within easy walking distance to Notre Dame and very close to metro and busses. The Marais is a wonderful area itself to explore. Cobblestone was very easy to work with and the apartment was really cute.
Stayed on the Ile Saint Louis in May at the Hotel Lutece. It was the perfect location for us. We were so centrally located that we did not have to take the Metro at all.....we loved being in the center of Paris, so close to all of the activity! I would recommend it!
I recommend a Jr. Suite (for a splurge) at Hotel Lenox Montparnasse - it's a lovely 3-star in the 14th, but just 5 minutes from the 6th, and 5 minutes walk to Luxembourg Gardens, close to lots of good restaurants and convenient to several metro lines and RER B. Even with a splurge, depending what month you're looking at, probably won't cost more than $200.
When in Paris we stay in the 5th (like a previous poster recommended). It's a central location with lots of young people around as it's the university district (Sorbonne just around the corner). We've stayed at the Hotel Latin Excelsior several times. It's nice, clean, middle of the road (no splurging necessary). There is an elevator AND the rooms have air-conditioning. The AC is a big plus so that you can close the windows and block out the noise (if necessary). If you choose to have bfast there they bake their own croissants, pane chocolates and other pastries on site so they come out hot and toasty. They are to die for!
Have fun, in Paris.
I would also check out the hotels on Ile St Louis. We returned a few weeks ago from a trip to France celebrating a milestone birthday. We stayed at Hotel Deux Ile Saint Louis. The location was stellar and just a few minutes walk to Notre Dame.
Thanks for all the great suggestions. It is very helpful to hear more about different neighborhoods. With all these options I know we can find a great hotel without breaking the bank.
I'm a huge fan of staying on Ile St Louis, my favorite neighborhood in Paris. Stayed at many hotels in the 5th including Hotel des Grandes Ecoles, the 6th and 15th and still, my all time favorite is Ile St Louis and the hotels TC listed.
Hotel Latin Excelsior was great for us, too - all the reasons Tim cited above. The location was convenient to many interesting sights and transportation, and close to the Luxembourg Gardens as well. We discovered Maison Pradier for breakfast one morning, and liked it so well that we returned there for the next three days! They won the best eclair in Paris award in 2015 - and it was a pleasant place to start our days.
When we were there it was a major heat wave, and I was very thankful that we'd chosen a hotel with reliable AC. I also used one of those cool scarves from REI that you soak in water first for hours of cooling. And finally, I took a small insulated thermos and used the ice from this lovely hotel to be sure I always had cold water! (Our first hotel in Paris did not have an ice maker, so this one was especially appreciated!) The little things...:-) But, I'm sharing this because the heat was a major factor in our time in Paris that July - so maybe it will help you to know these thoughts.
Happy Anniversary! We celebrated our 25th in Paris - memorable and magnifique!
