Hotel Du Guesclin Mont St Michel

I have read some reviews on TA but since it is recommended in RS guidebook I'm wondering if anyone on this forum has stayed here or eaten in the restaurant.

Carolyn: Last fall, we stayed at here and ate our dinner in the restaurant. Our room was somewhat spartan but had all the essentials. When we booked the hotel, we also reserved a table at the window and had a wonderful dinner overlooking the bay. As I recall, I had the local lamb specialty--a grassfed lamb with a distinctive salty taste--wonderful! So, I would certainly recommend the experience to anyone. Ahead of time, figure out only the basics of clothing, toothbrush, etc. that you will need for the stay and put them into one small backpack. You will have to carry your baggage a bit up the hill and you certainly do not want to be dragging suitcases behind you.

Did both in the spring. The room was OK, you could see how in that spot the rooms would get a little rundown over the years. You have to deal with the climb to the hotel (you climb everywhere there and stairs in the hotel too). You have to weigh the amount you care about fancy rooms vs the location you're spending the night. The night we were there it was kinda magical, beautiful sunset, electric storms off in the distance and a beautiful moon too. Probably wouldn't have spent the time there to enjoy the evening if we were staying off the island.

We loved the dinner but found the breakfast only OK (on the French scale, not comparing it to your American Hampton Inn breakfast).

If we were to return we'd probably stay there and eat dinner again, but skip breakfast. And we'd leave a lot of stuff in the car.

I've also stayed and had dinner at Hotel Du Guesclin. By all means, reserve a room that overlooks the bay, likewise a table for dinner. I'd been looking forward to the lamb but found it a little tough. Same with the "far breton" dessert. But the local cider that they serve was excellent and the whole experience memorable!

Just got back last night from our 2 week trip in France. We stayed on the island of Mont. St. Michel.....was a bucket list thing! It was kind of crazy.....found our #3 parking lot, had to write the hotel the night before to get the code to let us in the lot (why didn't they send it to us without us having to ask for it!) and then took small bags with necessities in and caught the shuttle. It was magical.....it really is so nice to be there from 5 on when ALL the crowds leave. It is VERY small....I was not ready to realize that the street winds only about 100 yards......and the rest of the island is not reachable by that road. We stayed at Hotel La Croix Blanche....ate at their restaurant and it was decent......they do not have to be good cooks......no where else to go! The water did not come in the night we were there but it really is fun to have a room....and ours was very small but nice and comfortable and cozy....on the bay and see the view from our room window. When it got dark we threw our coats over our pj's and ran out to the gate to get a night picture of the island.....an experience I will never forget! Directions to get there and park are no where to be found......make certain you press your hotel for some help as we had to!
