My family (me, my wife, and intellectually disabled 26 year old daughter) are traveling to Versailles in a few months and are considering Hôtel du Cheval Rouge. We are looking for a clean, not too expensive, and centrally located hotel in versailles. Has anyone stayed at the Hôtel du Cheval Rouge recently? There are mixed reviews online.
I can't help you with this hotel, but we really enjoyed our stay at Hôtel Le Louis Versailles Château - MGallery. It is located right near the palace entrance and was a surprisingly good value for our dates given its more upmarket decor and amenities.
I have a friend who lives there, and Cheval Rouge is where he refers his friends/family who visit from out of town, for what it's worth.
I have stayed at that hotel, but my stay was almost 20 years ago so I don't have recent experience. At the time it was a good hotel. However I will comment that the hotel location is very convenient, because it's right off Place du Marché Notre Dame, so if you’re there during one of the market days you don't have to walk very far before you're in the thick of the market action. Plenty of places to eat and drink around there, and it's walkable to other parts of Versailles as well as the Chateau (palace).
The distance to/from train stations depends on which one you go in and out of. That hotel is close to the Rive Droite and Rive Gauche stations, but I think there is more service to Chantiers which would involve more of a walk. But if the whole family is going to share a taxi to the station anyway, all of the stations are just a short drive from the hotel.
