Hotel de la Marine - don't miss it!

We were in Paris over Thanksgiving and discovered by a recommendation from the Concierge at our hotel a new (since June) museum on Place de la Concorde in central Paris. It's kind of like a small Versailles with wonderfully restored rooms. There was a special exhibit upstairs that was a bit crowded (the Althani Collection of ancient art from the world). One of the most impressive things was the quality of the self-guided tour. The headphones were comfortable, clear (in British English), and best of all they could tell what room you were in and where you were standing. So the narration was precisely matched to your personal position. If you stayed in a room longer it added more and more details about what you were seeing. The audio could be made to sound like it was in front of you, to your left or right, or even behind you. By far the best tour I have ever had!

That's good to hear! I had it on my to-do list but did not get to it. I'll make sure to see it next trip. It's certainly in a convenient location, lol.

Thanks for the review!

editing to add: Also, be sure to look at the outside. On the wall facing down Rue de Rivoli there are pock marks from bullets from the Liberation of Paris in August 1944. A Paris Walk guide pointed them out on a walking tour of the area.

We did this last fall and it is interesting and conveniently located as chateaux go. Be sure to get the larger tour that includes the private rooms and not the shorter one of only the public rooms. The private rooms are the most interesting. At the end you can go out onto the loggia that overlooks Concord with a nice view of the obelisk and the Eiffel Tower. Definitely reserve a couple days in advance; the first time we tried to book in early November it was sold out for the next couple days.

This is one you really want to book in advance! Tried to book in November but was too late
