Hotel Advice - 11th

I keep talking myself in and out of this decision and would appreciate some feedback. I have a hotel reserved for an upcoming trip, about .3 east of the Place des Vosges (in the 11th). With points, it's free so it seems silly to pay for another option.

However, it just feels a little far out for me. I'll be traveling solo and staying for a week. I'm comfortable on the metro but I really prefer to walk so safety is a concern as is ease to drop off items, pop in for a rest before dinner, etc. It's not far from the Marais, which I assume I'd take most meals in, but it also doesn't look like the nicest walk between the two.

My plan is to keep this free option until the week before the trip, and then see if Hotwire or a similar option has a steep discount for something in 1, 2 or 4.

I appreciate any feedback someone might have to help tip the pros/cons scale for me. Thank you in advance!

My feedback is that you are wasting your time worrying about that which is not important.

Place des Vosges is a wonderful part of Paris, with much to see nearby and many excellent restaurants.

Concentrate now on making restaurant, museum, and concert reservations.

The 11th is the hippest part of Paris, and if you have a free chance to stay there, I would jump on it!!

Also, the Bastille metro station, which must be not too far from where you are staying, is well located to get you lots of places.

As a solo female traveler, I worry about those things too and I think it's a legitimate topic on which to post. Forum members are free to move on to another topic if they don't feel a particular post has merit. No need to demean other's worries.

I am not familiar with this neighborhood but I just picked a point .4 mile east of Place des Vosges and walked it to the square. It looks good to me and I didn't see any red flags that would deter me from staying in the area. If you want to be more specific about the hotel location that might help others hone in on what your worries are.

I've recently seen a couple of things about a patisserie that is about a mile east of Place des Vosges that is supposed to be wonderful!

Assuming you mean .3 miles east of Place des Vosges, you are probably somewhere near Le Cafe des Chats. I stay in Paris in the 4th arrondissement technically in Le Marais but very close to the Bastille metro and the area where arrondissements 4, 11, and 12 meet. I don't see any safety concerns with the area where I think (based on my assumptions) that your hotel is located. It might be noisy and busy but it is not unsafe. This area is one of my favorite parts of Paris because I feel like it is slightly out of tourist central but very well connected transit wise and within a 20-30 minute walk of a lot of stuff and the restaurants are generally good. If I was staying in the 11th, I probably would not take most of my meals in Le Marais and would check out some of the restaurants in the 11th, many of which are quite good. Have you looked at reviews on Tripadvisor or Booking.com for the hotel to see if any reviews refer to safety concerns?

Thank you all for your responses. I guess my concern was less about safety than convenience. I've never stayed 'out' that far - and yes, I know it's not actually that far! Just involves a little more planning than if I could pop in to drop off purchases or rest for an hour. I very much appreciate everyone's feedback!

Critter -- I think you will be fine popping in - as I said, as Bastille there are three metro lines that converge, so wherever you are, you are likely not to be too far from there !!! (Or maybe I am just overcompensating since I live four metro stops further out !! 😜😜)

Thanks, Kim. This is my first trip like this (sans kids and spouse, a solo recharge) so I have no idea how my days will actually look! I'm usually a huge planner but trying hard to take this trip very differently, wandering rather than agenda. Maybe there will be no need to pop back to the hotel when I can just stop whenever and wherever I feel like a glass of wine! Ahhhh... can't imagine what the freedom will be like to not cater to other people!

"Ahhhh... can't imagine what the freedom will be like to not cater to other people!"

You might feel a little lonely at times but it will be so much fun to do whatever you want. After years of going with the family and planning everything and making compromises, I went alone and I found myself feeling guilty sometimes that I was having such a good time without my husband and children.
