I'll be touring Normandy on and around D-Day this year (eep! I'm so excited!) with a group. Our itinerary is pretty full but we have some free time in the afternoon and into the evening. I would love to visit Honfleur as part of my leisure time but I don't want to shortchange the experience if I only have so much time. I also don't know exactly where our home base is.
Should I plan on an excursion there or is there somewhere else closer by that would be better? I'm mostly interested in a place that is low key and more of a place to soak in the people and culture. Merci beaucoup!
Half day does not lend itself much to immersing in culture. However Honfleur is much like a village. Very tranquil, by the river and and many French style cafes to enjoy. Many plein artists set up easels by the rivers edge to paint the lovely village.
Without your own private transportation it will be very hard to get from Bayeux to Honfleur and back in an afternoon.
From Caen it could work, as there are regular buses between between the two, but I don't know their schedule or frequency.
