Home base in Southern France

Hi everyone! I have read many posts and comments here, and didn't find specific feedback about the best base in Southern France. I would like to pick up a car in Avignon, and head to a smaller town, centrally based, to enjoy Arles, isle Sur la Sorge, and a few other places. We have about five days to explore. I'm an avid antique hunter, so wondered if the recommended St Remy was a good choice, or stay on the Isle? Haven't been to any of these places yet.

And if your first stop is Paris, and you want to visit the Loire valley, as well as southern France, which would you do first? Loire valley or Southern France. Then of course fly home from Paris.

Thanks for any suggestions!

given that you are an antique hunter I would suggest Isle S la S. its a very pretty town and great market. if your there on the correct day. we stayed in St Remy is was just perfect as a base to travel from. but I did toss a coin between the two.
do yourself a favour and do a search ( top bar on the screen) on this forum for previous posts about this area of france.

hope this helps.

We stayed in Isle Sur la Sorge a few years ago after picking up a car in Avignon. We drove all over the area during the five days, also. It was a good location that enabled us to see a lot. It's a lovely little town also.
I think I picked it due to finding a nice gite there.. St. Remy was also lovely. You might just search for gites and decide based on your favorite gite. That's what I usually do and it works out great. Guess I'm just assuming you will be staying in a gite over a hotel😊

Thank you Kathryn and Glen, appreciate your feedback.

Yes we will try to stay in an apartment wherever we stay, and not a hotel. I will probably book Air B&B again. Using that in Paris.

It is great to have options as to where to home base. Rick Steves articles really push St. remy so I wondered if there is some major problem staying in Isle Sur for some reason? It does seem more centrally located?

Thanks!

we stayed in a lovely B&B in St Remy, where we could park the car and literately walk a few hundred metres ( if that) into the centre of the town. the only reason why we did not choose isle was I could not find accommodation that was close to the town that had good parking. not to say it doesn't exist. its always a bit difficult to visualize the area when you are planning. even with google maps etc.

i would definitely stay in a b&b etc as it was great to get advice form our hosts for surrounding attractions to see. if you have any trouble thinking of places to visit near st remy, just ask here. i can easily suggest some.

We rented a gite and stayed on the outskirts of Isle Sur la Sorge a few years ago. We were there two weeks. We found it to be a nice town and from there we explored in all directions. A big antique and farmers market might have been on Sunday I forget which day.

Thanks so much for the feedback on the Isle. It all helps me come to some decisions since you have experienced the surroundings.

I would love to know the B&B you stayed in in St. Remy? That is a good suggestion about a b & b instead of an apartment, to have people to talk to, and easy and free parking and access to the car.

And interesting about having to park away from town on the Isle. I'll look in to that more.
Thanks so much!

The only time we had a problem finding a parking place in Isle was on market day. Then it was very crowded but just circle around a bit and you'll get a place. During market day my wife went in a small bakery and said something in English to me. The lady behind the counter said "I don't understand a word you are saying!" in perfect English. She was kidding of course. She was from NYC and married a Frenchman who was the baker. She called a favorite restaurant of hers and set us up with reservations. I think that was our last dinner in Isle, on a terrace by the river. It was a great meal. There are helpful people everywhere. The tourist bureau there helped me get tickets to a bull games match and it wasn't easy but they hung in there until they got it worked out.
