Home base from Loire, Ambois or Tours?

Hello

I am planning a trip to France this year and will be stopping the Loire region for a few days. I love chateaux's and would appreciate any insight you may have as to what's the best home base for exploring. I would be arriving by train from Mt. Saint Michel and after loire would be heading to Dordogne. I have read about Tours and Blois, they both look amazing, RS recommends Ambois. If anyone has been to these places can you please let me know what home base was easiest to get around by bus or train?

Thanks

I think that Tours would be easiest if you do not plan to rent a car. As between Amboise and Blois, I am undecided on which is a better base, especially if your focus is the eastern Loire Valley. Blois is bigger if that makes a difference to you.

We rented a car and stayed in Amboise.. loved it.. cute town ( not a large city ) and we found we could get around everywhere easily from there..
I have heard there are a lot of tours that leave from Tours.. but one tour company I have heard a lot of good stuff about Acco Dispo.. and they do pick up in Amboise.

Speaking for myself I would rent a car for visiting the chateaux. Put anyway Chenonceaux on the list and even it´s just only to see that impressive outside Chambord (inside it´s a bit empty) as well. Amboise is interesting also as the place where Leonardo da Vinci is burried and the mansion Clos-Lucé where he lived at the end of his life and died there too. For the gardens as well you can think about Chateau de Villandry.

It´s also fun to drive along the Loire river and follow other touristic itineraries and visiting places like for instance Loches. The chateaux / places are so much spread out I think public transport will be too much time consuming and will limit flexibility if you like to change plans (surely can happen) on the spot.

A bit of background info about the place you are going to see can make the visit more interesting like for Chenonceaux the intruiging rivalry between Dianne de Poitiers and Catherine de’ Medici. Just reading some wikipedia articles can be helpful enough.

You can´t go really wrong with Amboise as base I guess, indeed cute, has a good atmosphere and located a bit central. Have no idea about public transport as I used my car. And no personal experience with joining a tour, but support the idea to consider it as an option.

My girlfriend and I stayed in Amboise last May as a base when in the Loire and it was excellent. Found a fabulous B&B with view over the Loire river. Very handy for Chenenceaux (not to be missed) and also Chaumont (fabulous gardens)
We took the train from Paris to Tours where we rented a car

Amboise is a great choice, but for the best connections to the chateaux, plan on paying for a tour shuttle such as Acco-Dispo or another company, or renting a car. If you stay in Blois, there are better public transportation connections to chateaux like Chambord, Cheverny, and Chaumont, but there's not any quick public transportation to Chenonceau--my favorite (and Rick's too). You could take a train, but it could take one to two hours--and you'd arrive when all the tour buses arrive. I wouldn't stay in Tours because it's too much of a big urban city for my taste.

You really need to decide which chateaux you want to see. We rented a car and stayed at Le Grange, a B and B that was in the RS book. Wonderful little town. On days we saw 3 chateaux, we were exhausted. Then we based ourselves in Chinon and saw a few castles at the other end of the valley.

Advice on taking the tour bus. Look very carefully at the details. Some chateaux you visit and others you just drive by.

The TI also sold combo tickets at the time 2009. Driving time in France is always much longer than you think as is the Dordogne where we stayed our 4th and final week. Having a GPS would be helpful as we were not able to find out hotel because of the street market in the square. No matter what you pick I am sure you will enjoy all of them. If the timing is right, you can do a sound and light show at Blois and some others. Bad weather prevented us from seeing Blois.

Hi everyone thanks for your responses, they are very helpful. I will now rent a car in order to enjoy the scenery of the Loire. I was apprehensive at first to drive in a foreign country as I have heard horror stories about overseas car rentals but it seems like its the way to go. Also I will be visiting the Provence region and it makes sense to drive around that region to view all the small little villages. Amboise will be my home base as from the responses I prefer the smaller feel of it over the larger city of Tours.
