Home base for sightseeing on the French Riviera with a car?

We are looking for a four day home base on the French Riviera in late September. We will have a car. We want to visit Nice and also the Grand Canyon du Verdon and do some hiking in the mountains north of Nice. Any suggestions?

I have stayed in St Maximes a few times with a car and visited those areas. It is a charming town on the Med. with a nice market and lots of good restaurants and shopping. Beautiful beach and numerous hotels with parking.
