History of the 18th arrondissement in Paris

Does anyone know of any books or websites about the history of the 18th arrondissement? I did an Internet search but found only general walking tour information, such as which restaurants and shops to visit; or statistics such as population size.

Is there any particular area of that arrondissement that you're interested in? You might try searching on: history of Montmartre, history of Sacre Coeur, history of Moulin Rouge, history of marche Barbes, history of Pigalle, etc.. There are lots of books on the history of Montmartre over the years.

Elaine Sciolino's recent book The Only Street in Paris is about the life and history of Rue des Martyrs, which is on the border of the 9th and 18th arrondissements.

On "the history of the 18 arrondissment," In the Allied invasion of France in the spring of 1814, the Allies entered Paris by way of Montmarte because the French commander in charge of defending Montmarte decided on his own initiative to open negotiations with the Austrians,ie, without orders from Napoleon who was still south of Fontainebleau. When word of this unpleasant news was brought to Napoleon because of the surrender at Montmarte, " Napoleon was shocked, realised that Paris was lost and would soon be occupied by the Allies. With Paris in their hands, the Allies had won against Napoleon.

Thank you all for your suggestions. The area I'm interested in is between the Boulevard Barbes and Rue Stephenson. The area was an immigrant neighborhood 100 years ago and is an immigrant neighborhood today. I'd like to know when immigrants first started settling there and why, and how the neighborhood has changed over time.

The Mairie of the 18th would be able to help you. The website for the 18th Arrondissement Mairie has Telephone no. and e-mail contact info. The Mairie of the 3rd was very helpful to us in finding information about a WWII heroic relative of my stepdaughter.
