Historical Towns Outside of Strasbourg - Seeking Recommendations

Hello,
We are interested in staying in the Strasbourg area, but do not want to stay in the center of Strasbourg. We would prefer a quieter, historical town outside of Strasbourg. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you!

We loved our stay in Barr a small town a short distance by train from Straz.
It has an abundance of charming buildings throughout the old town.
It is in a stunning setting surrounded by vinyards and the forested Vosges mountains.
In the nearby forests are 3 x 13th C castle ruins.
We stayed at and mostly ate at the hotel Maison Rouge.

Colmar's old town. Colmar was the last town in FR to be liberated during WWII and today is a fairy tale town.

We enjoyed both Obernai and Barr. Obernai is larger with more shops and restaurants and we preferred it over Barr.

How will you be getting around? That has a major impact on which historical cities might be suitable.

We loved Ribeauville. Spent 3 nights. We were able to walk to other villages. Easy drive to castle. Didn’t seem that touristy. Great hike up to ruins right outside of town.

Thank you for the replies. Can anybody recommend a chateau in the region?

We thought Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg was pretty impressive. It’s 49 minutes or so from Strasbourg and 35 minutes from Colmar. It isn’t a Château like Chambord or Chenonceaux as it has a defensive purpose too.

We too liked Ribeauville.
