I love a good historical home tour when traveling. I’m planning to revisit Victor Hugo’s home this trip (bonus: it’s free!) but are there others that should be on my radar? I’m not attached to any particular era or neighborhood, I just find it’s an interesting way to learn about how people lived in the past.

Musée Cognacq-Jay in the Marais is wonderful. This wealthy couple owned the original Samaritaine department store. Their home is a terrific example of how wealthy Parisians lived in those days. The wife collected miniatures in her travels. They were so whimsical, and I looked at them for so long, that the guard came back to see if I was alright. He smiled when he saw that I was enjoying my time there so thoroughly. Highly recommended.
The Museum of Decorative Arts has an exhibit starting this week about life in an aristocratic townhouse at the end of the 18th century.
"The Musée des Arts Décoratifs invites visitors to step inside the intimate world of an eighteenth-century aristocratic residence and its inhabitants – masters, servants, and household animals."
The museum is next door to the Louvre.
Hotel de la Marine is a mansion on the Place de la Concorde with an interesting history. The well done audio guide gives a glimpse into the daily lives of the past occupants. And it offers a beautiful view of the city from the loggia.
Thanks for all the great suggestions!
My first thought was Jean's suggestion, Hotel de la Marine. Are you going to be there long enough for a Passion Monuments Subscription to be worthwhile? The Hotel de la Marine is one of the venues you can visit with it. The audio guide is excellent.

I'll also add the Museum of Hunting and Nature. Like the Cognac-Jay it's nearby and in an old mansion. One thing to note, if you are upset by taxidermied wildlife then I'd give this a miss.

I have a Passions Monuments pass! And I think Jeanm is actually the one who originally gave me that suggestion…and is therefore inadvertently responsible for this trip :) My “girl math”: I have this pass, better go back and use it more before it expires!
We did get to visit the Hotel de la Marine back in May & it was great. This time around, I’m looking forward to using the pass to visit the Pantheon for the first time & maybe revisiting the towers of Notre Dame if I get a nice day. Also thinking about going out to Chartres for a day.
Oh, I love to be blamed for causing you to visit Paris!
If the Panorama is open at the Pantheon, the view is wonderful. Have you been to St. Denis?
Any excuse to go back, right? I don’t think the Panorama will be open yet when I’m there this time around, but adding St. Denis to the list of potential visits. My trip last spring was a busy one (my mom’s first time so we hit a LOT of sites)…this time, I’m trying to take things slower and just see where the days take me.
“I have this pass, better go back and use it more before it expires!”
Jeanm is definitely the enabler on this! 😆😉. I suspect there was an uptick in sales to Americans!
Did you and your Mom visit the Musee Carnavalet? It also is in an old mansion although it’s been added on to.
@Pam we didn’t go on that trip, but I’ve been to the Carnavalet before & loved it! I wound up spending way longer than expected because it was just so interesting and well presented, plus the building itself is incredible. Actually, this was a big reason for my second trip to Paris as it was still closed for renovation the first time I went.
Highly recommend for anyone who is interested in history…also, it’s a City of Paris museum, so it’s free :)
